Job summary

City of Roanoke, Virginia seeks a Virginia DCJS certified Police Officer to serve as a part-time School Resource Officer (SRO) for Roanoke City Schools. The officer will teach, counsel, and patrol to promote safety and positive police-community relations within a school setting.

The SRO will engage with students, staff, and families, following district schedules and events, including dances and athletic activities. Must maintain professional standards and safety protocols.

Qualifications

• Virginia DCJS certification required; handgun certification per Virginia law.
• Basic law enforcement academy completed; probationary period completed.
• SRO certification preferred but not required.
• Associate’s degree or equivalent in social or police science desirable.

Responsibilities

• Serve as School Resource Officer for Roanoke City School system.
• Interact with students, staff, and parents to promote safety and positive police/community relations.
• Lead teaching activities, provide counseling and guidance to students.
• Document incidents and maintain safety and discipline within the school environment.
• Adhere to Roanoke City Public Schools calendar and schedules.
