Job summary

The Prince George's County Police Department is hiring part-time School Crossing Guards to help ensure the safety of children at crosswalks across Prince George's County. Shifts are 7:00–10:00 a.m.

and 1:30–5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the position is permanent part-time. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, be at least 18, have reliable transportation, wear a uniform, and pass vision/hearing tests and background checks.

Qualifications

• Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED.
• Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
• Must pass the police vision and hearing test and/or other required examinations.
• Must be able to report to assigned training sites and school worksites within 1 hour of notification through reliable transportation.
• Must be accessible before and during school hours by phone to respond to scheduling changes.
• Preferred Qualifications: Possession of a valid Class C Driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Safely direct and escort school children and other pedestrians to cross the street at the school crossing guard signal and stopping traffic, as necessary.
• Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at the designated crossing to allow children to cross safely.
• Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which school children and pedestrians can cross streets.
• Control the children using the crossing to ensure they conform to traffic regulations.
• Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to school children and other pedestrians.
