Job summary

Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, MI is seeking a Part-time Public Safety Service Officer to protect campus facilities and people. This non-sworn, non-certified role responds to medical, fire, security, and other campus incidents.

Qualifications

Position Summary

The Part‑time Public Safety Service Officer is responsible for ensuring the public safety of the College community, including buildings and property. This non‑sworn/non‑certified position responds to emergency situations throughout campus, such as medical emergencies, fires, disturbances, criminal activity, and any other calls for service that involve the campus and persons on campus.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Respond to calls for service regarding public safety.
  • Patrol College property on foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle according to procedures.
  • Turn off/on all campus alarm systems, monitor activity, respond to activations and take appropriate action.
  • Assist with general office duties.
  • Create initial written reports on all incidents; maintain a daily log.
  • Lock and unlock all College buildings according to schedule; patrol buildings and grounds.
  • Assist with maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Make deliveries of funds and important materials to appropriate locations.
  • Check hazardous materials storage; respond to spills or hazardous material incidents.
  • Assist with traffic and parking control, issue notices for violations as per procedures.
  • Assist with emergency building evacuation.
  • Guide disruptive persons to facilitate a peaceful resolution.
  • Assist in rescue operations.
  • Attend campus regularly.
  • Use technology, including AI‑enabled tools, to support duties while ensuring compliance with confidentiality and institutional policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Hours/Schedule

This position will work 20‑24 hours per week with flexibility around class and work schedules. Shifts include 7 A–3 P, 3 P–11 P, and 11 P–7 A, Monday through Sunday. The officer is required to work holidays and all college closure days, regardless of weather.

Physical Demands
  • Lift, pull, and push more than 100 pounds.
  • Work in confined spaces, at heights, and below ground.
  • Wear a uniform.
Work Environment
  • Work in all weather conditions and respond to emergencies such as accidents, fires, gas leaks, etc., with personal injury risk.
  • Encounter confined spaces, heights, and below ground conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum age 18 at time of hire.
  • First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • Ability to lift and position injured persons, provide emergency aid.
  • Defensive maneuvering skills to protect self and others.
  • Ability to move freely around campus.
  • High levels of honesty and integrity; discretion with confidential info.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and agencies.
  • Proficiency with workplace technology and emerging AI tools; assess AI reliability and maintain confidentiality.

Salary/Hourly Rate

$23.19 per hour (2026–2027 Wage Rate).
