The Role

We are seeking empathetic and motivated Peer Coaches to join our Behavioral Health Call Center team. As a Peer Coach, you will use your lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery to provide hope, support, and encouragement to individuals reaching out for assistance. This role is integral to fostering a compassionate and non-judgmental environment, offering callers guidance, emotional support, and resource connections to aid in their recovery journey. This work is carried out in support of the mission and goals of Samaritan Daytop Village.

Responsibilities

What You Will Do

  • Answer inbound calls and provide peer-to-peer support to individuals experiencing behavioral health challenges.
  • Share personal recovery experiences to inspire hope and demonstrate the possibility of wellness and recovery.
  • Listen actively to callers, validate their feelings, and encourage them to explore recovery options.
  • Serves as a role model, mentor, and advocate in order to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery.
  • Assist callers in identifying and connecting with community resources, support groups, and recovery services.
  • Establish a trusting relationship with the client based on mutuality and unconditional positive regard during outreach and meetings in the community and in various program settings.
  • Help de-escalate emotionally charged situations by offering calm and empathetic responses.
Qualifications

Who You Will Be

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Personal experience with mental health challenges and/or substance use recovery
  • At least two (2) years’ work experience or volunteer experience in a recovery-oriented setting.
  • Certified Recovery Peer Advocate-CRPA or CRPA-Provisional for designated OASAS programs
    • OR
  • New York Certified Peer Specialist -NYCPS or NYCPS for designated OMH programs.
  • Knowledge of substance use disorder recovery process.
  • Basic computer literacy including familiarity in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Commitment to recovery-oriented systems of care.
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently.
  • Ability to think logically, prioritize and follow procedures and instructions.

*Peer Specialist: (NYS Certified Peer Specialist, NYS Family Peer Advocate, Certified Recovery Peer Advocate or Certified Addictions Recovery Coach). It is expected that the person in this position become dually certified for both mental health and substance use disorders within a year of hire. Upon hire, this person must have one certification (either MH or SUD listed above) and must be willing to obtain the other certification within a year of hire, with initial certification to be paid for by RCDMH*
