Job summary

Leila Day Nurseries in New Haven is seeking an enthusiastic, reliable Assistant Teacher for our After School Adventure Program, serving children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade (ages 5–9). This part-time, non-exempt role supports the Lead Teacher in engaging, playful learning after the regular school day.

You will help create a safe, inclusive environment, lead outdoor explorations, art and movement activities, and encourage independence and curiosity.

Qualifications

• Experience working with children in school, camp, childcare, or related settings.
• Genuine interest in ages 5–9.
• Experience spending time outdoors (hiking, nature, etc.).
• Willingness to learn about outdoor education and emergent curriculum.
• Dependability, punctuality, and clear communication.
• Ability to collaborate as part of a teaching team.
• Warm, patient, and respectful approach to children.

Responsibilities

• Build positive relationships with children ages 5–9 and support their development through play and hands-on experiences.
• Collaborate with Lead Teacher to create a safe, welcoming environment responsive to children's interests.
• Engage children in outdoor exploration and nature-related activities.
• Support activities in art, movement, games, science, and nature; adapt to children's interests.
• Encourage independence and meaningful choices while promoting curiosity and risk awareness.
• Assist with daily classroom operations and maintain a safe learning environment.
• Work with the team through clear communication and shared responsibility.
