Virtual TVI is hiring a part-time Orientation and Mobility Specialist, COMS to provide services nationwide as an independent contractor. The role includes direct instruction, assessments, IEP support, and travel to districts for in-person services.

Flexible hours (5–30 per week), opportunity to adjust caseload, competitive pay at $65–$85 per hour, and all approved travel expenses covered. Remote administrative work with travel to districts.

Qualifications

  • Current Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist, COMS, certification through ACVREP.
  • Minimum two years of professional O&M experience preferred.
  • Experience with students with visual impairments in school settings.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with Virtual TVI team and districts.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct Orientation and Mobility instruction to students with visual impairments according to IEPs.
  • Conduct comprehensive O&M assessments and evaluations.
  • Develop goals and service plans based on assessment results and student needs.
  • Provide consultative O&M services to educational teams, families, and school staff.
  • Teach age and ability appropriate travel skills in various environments as required.
  • Participate in IEP/504/Child Find meetings as needed.
  • Write and update O&M goals, progress reports, and documentation.
  • Monitor progress and adjust instruction based on student performance.

Part-Time Orientation and Mobility Specialist, COMS

Virtual TVI provides educational vision services to school districts and private clients nationwide. We are hiring a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist, COMS, to join our team as an independent contractor providing Orientation and Mobility services to students with visual impairments.

This position includes direct O&M instruction, consultation, assessments, IEP support, and travel to school districts for in-person services. Travel assignments may range from local or single-day visits to multi-day trips depending on district and student needs. All approved travel expenses are paid.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct Orientation and Mobility instruction to students with visual impairments according to their IEPs
  • Conduct comprehensive Orientation and Mobility assessments and evaluations
  • Develop recommendations, goals, and service plans based on assessment results and student needs
  • Provide consultative O&M services to educational teams, families, and school staff
  • Teach age and ability appropriate travel skills in school, community, home, and other environments as required
  • Provide instruction in areas such as sensory awareness, spatial concepts, body awareness, environmental concepts, protective techniques, human guide techniques, cane skills, route planning, street crossings, public transportation, and community travel as appropriate for each student
  • Participate in IEP, 504, Child Find, eligibility, and triennial review meetings as needed
  • Write and update O&M goals, present levels, progress reports, assessment reports, and other required educational documentation
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on student performance and changing needs
  • Collaborate with Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments, special education staff, general education staff, related service providers, administrators, families, and students
  • Provide training and consultation to school staff when needed to support student safety, access, and independence
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation within Virtual TVI and district systems
  • Follow district policies and procedures while providing services on school campuses and in community environments
  • Respond to work related emails and calls within one business day during school hours
  • Communicate proactively with your Virtual TVI supervisor regarding student concerns, scheduling, documentation, and travel needs
  • Travel to assigned school districts for assessments, direct services, consultation, and other O&M needs
Requirements
  • Current Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist, COMS, certification through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals, ACVREP
  • Minimum two years of professional experience providing Orientation and Mobility services preferred
  • Experience working with school-age students with visual impairments
  • Experience conducting O&M assessments and developing recommendations based on assessment results
  • Experience developing and implementing IEP goals and documenting student progress
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with the Virtual TVI team and assigned school districts
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Professionalism when working with students, families, educators, administrators, and district personnel
  • Reliable internet access, computer access, and comfort using virtual meeting and documentation platforms
  • Ability and willingness to travel for assignments that may range from single-day visits to multi-day trips
  • Availability during the school day
  • Ability to maintain required professional certification throughout the contract period
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to safely travel within assigned communities when required for O&M instruction
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience serving students across a range of ages and visual conditions
  • Experience working with students who have additional disabilities
  • Experience providing O&M services within public school systems
  • Experience collaborating remotely with educational teams
  • Experience completing O&M assessments for students in multiple educational environments

Schedule: Flexible based on caseload and district needs, with services primarily provided during the school day

Pay: $65 to $85 per hour

Work Location: Remote administrative and consultation work with travel to assigned school districts for in-person O&M services

Travel: Required based on assigned caseload. Approved travel expenses are paid by Virtual TVI.
