Job description

This Monday‑Friday part‑time hourly position pays $17.20 per hour and runs from approximately 6AM to 10AM. The job is located in the Birch Bayh Federal Building at 46E Ohio St, Indianapolis, IN46204.

Role Overview

Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana (GCSI), in partnership with the federal government through the AbilityOne program, maintains clean and orderly conditions at local federal facilities. The janitorial position supports healthy operations and environments at the Birch Bayh Federal Building.

Responsibilities

• Clean office areas, courtrooms, hallways, lobbies, breakrooms/cafeterias, restrooms, elevators, stairways, locker rooms, and other assigned work areas.
• Polish lighting fixtures, marble surfaces, and trim; disinfect furniture and equipment; polish metalwork; wipe down walls, ceilings, and woodwork; wash windows, door panels, and sills.
• Empty wastebaskets and ashtrays; transport trash and waste to the disposal area; replenish bathroom supplies.
• Communicate with Goodwill management and customers when appropriate; transport small equipment or tools between departments.
• Set up tables and chairs in auditoriums or halls.
• Sweep, scrub, wax, and polish floors; clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies.

Required Competencies

• Demonstrate capability and articulate how prior experiences will help contribute.
• Communication Skills: give full attention to others, ask questions as appropriate, and read basic written sentences and paragraphs.
• General Labor Skills: carry out simple one- or two-step instructions with minimal variable situations.
• Safety Awareness: recognize risks, apply control measures, and follow safety protocols.

Preferred Competencies

• Janitorial Skills: remove dust from furniture, blinds, windowsills; sweep and mop floors; clean and disinfect bathrooms; learn to use janitorial tools and equipment including dust cloths, vacuum cleaners, and cleaning chemicals.
• Floor Cleaning Equipment Expertise: operate riding and walk‑behind scrubbers and other floor care equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

Other Requirements

Moderate to hard physical work is required, including walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and occasionally lifting or moving up to 25 pounds. The employee will be exposed to dust, debris, slippery floors, and moving mechanical parts of floor cleaning equipment. The noise level is generally low and visual acuity is required to adjust focus.
