Job summary

Southside Eyecare & Optical in Anchorage, Alaska, is seeking a part-time Medical Billing specialist to handle claim submissions, posting payments, insurance verifications, and follow-up. This role suits someone who is detail-oriented and self-directed.

The position focuses on out-of-network vision billing and medical insurance submissions, with opportunities to grow within the private practice. Clinic hours are flexible to accommodate 2–3 days per week.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of medical billing experience.
• Solid understanding of medical insurance billing, out-of-network for vision plans and billing across most services.
• Experience with CMS-1500 forms and paper claim submissions.
• Familiarity with Medicare and Medicaid billing processes.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
• Comfortable with patient-facing interactions and explaining insurance clearly.

Responsibilities

• Submit electronic and paper claims across multiple insurance carriers including medical insurances, Medicare, and Medicaid.
• Post payments and explanations of benefits accurately and timely.
• Monitor and work through claim denials, rejections, and appeals.
• Prepare and mail paper claims including CMS-1500 forms and Medicaid crossover claims.
• Review patient accounts or insurance aging for outstanding balances and follow up as needed.
• Monitor patient invoices to ensure transactions are properly authorized in RevolutionEHR.
• Verify patient insurance eligibility as needed.

ABOUT THE ROLE

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

Medical Billing

• Submit electronic and paper claims across multiple insurance carriers including medical insurances, Medicare, and Medicaid
• Post payments and explanation of benefits (EOBs) accurately andin a timely manner
• Monitor and work through claim denials, rejections, and appeals
• Prepare and mail paper claims including CMS-1500 forms and Medicaid crossover claims requiring Medicare EOB attachments
• Review patient accountsor insurance agingfor outstanding balances and follow up as needed
• Monitor patient invoices to ensure all transactions are properly authorized inRevolutionEHR
• Verify patient insurance eligibility as needed

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Required:

• Minimum 2 years of medical billing experience
• Solid understanding of medical insurance billing — we are primarily out-of-network for vision plans and bill medical insurancesformost ofour services
• Experience with CMS-1500 forms and paper claim submissions
• Familiarity with Medicare and Medicaid billing processes
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
• Comfortable with patient-facing interactions and explaining insurance in plain language

Preferred:

• Experience in optometry, ophthalmology, or a related specialty
• Medicaid billing experience specific to Alaska
• RevolutionEHRexperience (we will train the right candidate)
• Experience with patient checkout and front desk operations
• Medical billing certification (CPC, CPB, or equivalent)
