Job description

BASIC FUNCTION:

Based on the applicant's position, experience, and program need, the applicant will work under the general direction of the Recreation Coordinator, Pool Manager, and Assistant Manager(s) performing various duties including guarding and protecting patrons and students during Open Swim and Swim Lessons, and teaching basic to advanced swim lessons to 1-4 students at a time. The Lifeguard Trainee/Lifeguard/Aquatic Instructor will educate and enforce rules and regulations to patrons and students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Becomes familiar with pool rules and regulations and enforces them.
  2. Displays leadership, responsibility, and professionalism during and after work hours.
  3. Communicates strongly with patrons, students, other Lifeguard/Aquatic Instructors, and supervisors.
  4. Follows work procedures and schedules.
  5. Issues written and oral instructions to students and patrons.
  6. Works with a workforce of over 50 staff members.
  7. Prepares attendance and accident reports and swim lesson report cards; maintains records and reports.
  8. Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering the phone, conducting classes, collecting fees, helping set up for classes, events, maintenance duties, etc.
  9. Responds to public inquiries about aquatics programs.

OTHER DUTIES:

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  1. Aquatic facilities, operations, and techniques used in a community aquatics program.
  2. Skill in First Aid, CPR, and Lifeguarding; rescue and resuscitate drowning persons; rescue and provide first aid to persons affected by life-threatening injuries.

ABILITY TO:

  1. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public.
  2. Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  3. Effectively enforce safety rules and regulations in the pool and surrounding area to ensure patron safety and prevent accidents.

Lifeguard I Minimum Qualifications:
Ability to obtain a Lifeguard/First Aid CPR Certification.

Lifeguard II Minimum Qualifications:
At least 1 year experience as a Lifeguard I or equivalent.
Must hold/possess a current lifeguard certification or have the ability to re-certify for the Lifeguard/First Aid CPR Certification.
