Job summary

The Jacksonville Public Library is seeking a Part-Time Library Facilities Maintenance Worker, reporting to the Manager for Facilities Maintenance, to perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor in maintenance, upkeep, and repair of library facilities.

You will operate basic tools and equipment, assist with loading/unloading materials weighing up to 50 pounds, and collaborate with others to preserve safety, cleanliness, and appearance of library facilities.

Qualifications

• One year of work experience in general maintenance and/or construction activities.
• Knowledge of safety rules and regulations applicable to maintenance work.
• Ability to operate hand and power tools and simple equipment.
• Ability to lift and move objects weighing 50 pounds or more.
• Familiarity with best practices for maintenance, upkeep, and repair of public facilities.

Responsibilities

• Performs unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in maintenance, upkeep, and repair of Library facilities.
• Loads and unloads materials from trucks.
• Operates machinery and tools such as cordless drills, power saws, shovels, sledgehammers, axes, and other basic equipment for exterior maintenance.
• Performs carpet replacement, wall repairs and painting, relocates and assembles furniture, and repairs/install hardware.
• Keeps tools and equipment clean and stored properly; uses ladders safely.
• Operates motor vehicles to transport materials, supplies, and tools.
• Maintains appearance of loading dock and work areas.
• Provides customer service to support a positive library experience.

Job description

The Jacksonville Public Library is seeking a Part-Time Library Facilities Maintenance Worker, reporting to the Manager for Facilities Maintenance.

This is service maintenance work in performing unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in the construction, maintenance, upkeep and repair of Library Facilities. Work requires knowledge of standardized work routines and procedures for minor construction projects, landscape maintenance and ability to operate simple machinery and equipment. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. Work is performed following specific instructions and established routines. Work may be performed outdoors where there are some risks and hazards associated with operating equipment. Physical demands consist of heavy physical exertion and lifting and moving objects weighing 50 pounds or more. Work is performed under immediate supervision where work assignments are well-detailed and well-prescribed by a superior or covered by established procedure and the work is not permitted to deviate from established procedures.

• Operates motor vehicles to transport materials, supplies, and tools.
• Maintains appearance of loading dock and work area.
• Supports the overall mission of the Library by providing customer service in a manner that creates a positive customer experience.
• Assists with maintaining appearance standards by reporting facilities issues and picking up litter on library grounds.
• Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
• Performs related work as required.

• Knowledge of “best practices” and procedures used in the maintenance, upkeep, and repair of public libraries.
• Knowledge of tools used in landscaping, maintenance, and construction work.

• Ability to replace carpet or ceramic floor tiles.
• Ability to repair pavers and level uneven pavers.

• Ability to change lock cylinders, dissemble, clean and repair existing locks.
