Job summary

Union County’s library system seeks a Library Assistant to support daily operations and programming across service areas. Job description

The Library Assistant, under general supervision, provides basic paraprofessional library services in an assigned service area of responsibility to support daily library operations.

Seeking a creative, organized, and enthusiastic team member to support library programming for children, teens, and adults. This position will assist with program coordination, publicity, social media, summer reading, and working with community partners and presenters. Strong Canva skills and experience developing engaging social media content are required, along with excellent communication, creativity, and attention to detail.   • Meets the needs of each patron by promptly and efficiently using the library's resources.
  • Responds to the needs of coworkers in work unit.
  • Helps maintain the collection.
  • Answers telephone queries quickly and efficiently, referring callers to the appropriate library department.
  • Maintains knowledge of library policy and procedure.
  • Reports any unsafe or threatening condition to library security personnel, administration, or proper authorities.
  • Attends staff development programs.
  • Possesses basic knowledge of library's electronic and physical resources.
  • Helps advocate for the library and its services in both internal and external settings.
  • Accepts changes in hours or assigned tasks as needed to provide excellent public service; adheres to assigned schedule with regular and dependable attendance.
POSITION SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
  • Assists the Programming Librarian with coordinating library programs for children, teens, and adults.
  • Assists with creating and distributing program publicity, including content for the quarterly program guide, flyers, and social media.
  • Assists with ensuring program publicity follows Union County brand standards.
  • Provides support for the library’s summer reading program and other system-wide programming initiatives.
  • Provides backup and support for programs hosted by the library, including assisting staff, presenters, and attendees.
  • Assists with maintaining positive relationships with outside presenters and community partners.
  • Performs other programming-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Library Assistant ($17.36 - $26.04 Hourly):

  • Education and Experience: Requires an Associate's Degree and one (1) year of experience of customer service; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Library Associate ($17.92- $26.88 Hourly):

  • Education and Experience: Requires a Bachelor's Degree and one (1) year of customer service experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Library Specialist ($21.92 - $32.89 Hourly):

  • Education and Experience: Requires a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of experience in customer service; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

This position may be subject to a fingerprint background check. Per NC General Statute 153A-94.2(b), applicants for a position of employment required to work with children in any capacity will be required to electronically submit fingerprints to the NC State Bureau of Investigation for a state and national criminal history record.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, printers, telephones, pagers, cash registers, book chargers, copiers, answering machines, fax machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Employees assigned to homebound must be physically able to drive a motor vehicle.
