Job summary

The City of San Mateo Public Library is seeking a part-time Library Assistant I/II (20 hours/week) in the Children’s Services Division at the Main Library. The Library Assistant supports programs, helps with reference inquiries, creates displays, and assists with storytimes and outreach activities.

The position involves clerical tasks, data maintenance, and collaboration with Library staff to support children, teens, and families.

Qualifications

• One year of experience performing general clerical or related work in a public library system.
• Completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by clerical and specialized college level courses in library science.
• Two years of technical and clerical library experience performing duties comparable to Library Assistant I for the City of San Mateo.

Responsibilities

• Prepare print and non-print materials for introduction into the library materials collection using automated cataloging tools.
• Assist adults and children in locating materials and place requests for unavailable items.
• Handle patron inquiries and resolve issues related to overdue or lost materials.
• Maintain statistics of library use and prepare reports on circulation and inquiries.
