Job summary

Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is seeking a part-time Grounds & General Maintenance Worker to support the Physical Plant Department on the North Campus in Decatur, AL. The role involves hands-on grounds care, basic maintenance, and collaboration with campus operations.

You will handle daily work orders, operate light equipment, follow safety practices, and assist with other maintenance tasks as needed in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years accumulative position related experience.
  • Valid Driver License and ability to be insured.
  • Ability to pass suitability requirements for employment.

Responsibilities

  • Daily Work Orders & Professional Care: Prioritize, assign, perform, and assist in closing daily work orders. Ensure all tasks, building repairs, and campus grounds maintenance are handled in an exemplary, professional manner.
  • Safety: Participate in Safety meetings as required by supervisor.
  • Compliance, Audits & Inspections: Collect health and safety data regarding all buildings, grounds, utility systems, and hardscapes.
  • Equipment Operation: Skilled in the safe operation of both light-duty equipment (weed-eaters, mowers, light tractors) and heavy-duty landscape equipment (bushogs, backhoes, skid-steer loaders).
  • Grounds Upkeep: Perform and oversee routine campus beautification tasks, including weeding, mowing, raking, hoeing, pruning, and mulching.
  • General Maintenance: Perform general maintenance functions and labor as assigned by supervisor.
  • Chemical & Hazard Remediation: Apply understanding of health & safety guidelines regarding hazardous materials. Understand remediation programs and safely work around hazardous materials, including fumes, airborne particles, and toxic/nontoxic chemicals (such as fertilizers and grounds-keeping chemicals).

ABOUT OUR LOCATION

The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind North Campus is located in Decatur, Alabama. The campus occupies a beautiful location that sits on Highway 31 in South Decatur. This is a recently created campus that, although under construction, is already home to a number of AIDB departments and staff. The expansion of programs in Decatur creates new opportunities and challenges as the campus is being created all while we continue to serve the local communities.

POSITION SUMMARY

This role performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks related to groundworks operation and general maintenance. Work may be assigned across multiple functional areas depending on operational needs. Position will assist craft maintenance personnel in addition to groundwork.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You will work as part of the campus operations team and will make effective decisions and solve problems using sound judgment working with commercial equipment. This position requires individual initiative and teamwork, excellent listening skills, and physical ability and stamina such as frequent standing, walking, lifting, and /or carrying materials. This position will work in all weather conditions, work effectively and communicate with groups and individuals of all ages in a blind, deaf, and multi-disabled community.

You will play a vital role to ensure that AIDB’s campuses are kept to a presentable standard. In this hands-on role, you will play a vital part in ensuring that the AIDB North campus maintained to the highest standards of safety, functionality, and presentation. Thriving in a self-driven environment, you will bridge the gap between strategy and execution—collaborating seamlessly with administrators, managing daily work orders, and supervising external contractors as needed to keep operations running smoothly.

Job Requirements & Skills
  • Grounds Maintenance: Skilled with general knowledge in all areas of grounds maintenance, chemical applications, and institutional landscaping.
  • Execution: Ability to independently understand, follow, and implement complex written and oral instructions, laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Computer Literacy: Proficient computer skills, specifically within the Microsoft Office & Google Workspace.
  • Physical Capability: Physically able to perform all assigned maintenance tasks and equipment operation.
Licensures & Certifications
  • Driver's License: Maintain a valid Driver License; must be insurable by the AIDB carrier.
  • Sign Language Proficiency: Must obtain a SURVIVAL sign language proficiency level according to the AIDB evaluation system within thirty-six (36) months of employment.
