Job summary

Oakland County is seeking a General Helper in the Safety Division to help protect County‑owned buildings by monitoring facilities, identifying safety concerns, and responding appropriately. The onsite role pays $16.71-$22.61 per hour, with duties including routine patrols, reporting incidents, and assisting with radio communications while following safety and emergency procedures.

Ideal candidates are dependable, observant, and ready to maintain a safe and secure environment for county employees

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old (or 16 with high school diploma or GED) and pass the employment exam and medical.
  • Valid US driver's license required for positions that require driving.
  • Out-of-country licenses must be converted to Michigan license before hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor County‑owned buildings and surrounding areas for safety and security concerns.
  • Conduct routine patrols of assigned buildings and areas.
  • Report incidents, hazards, or unusual activity promptly to the appropriate personnel.
  • Assist with radio communications and relay important information as needed.
  • Follow safety, security, and emergency procedures while staying aware of building activity.

General Summary

This position is onsite.


Are you dependable, observant, and interested in helping maintain a safe and secure environment? As a General Helper in the Safety Division, you'll help protect County‑owned buildings by monitoring facilities, identifying potential safety or security concerns, and responding appropriately when issues arise.


What You'll Do


  • Monitor County‑owned buildings and surrounding areas for safety and security concerns.

  • Conduct routine patrols of assigned buildings and designated areas.

  • Watch for signs of unauthorized entry, suspicious activity, or security concerns.

  • Identify immediate hazards such as fires, unsafe conditions, or other potential dangers.

  • Promptly report incidents, hazards, or unusual activity to the appropriate personnel or authorities.

  • Assist with radio communications and relay important information when assigned.

  • Follow established safety, security, and emergency procedures while maintaining awareness of building activity.

Minimum Qualifications

Have passed their 18th birthday; OR be at least 16 years old and a high school graduate; OR have completed the state requirements for the General Educational Development Test (GED); OR have an emancipated minor.


Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical established for this classification.


NOTE: A valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license will be required for certain positions.


Out of Country driver's license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver's license before the hire date.


Successfully complete the six month probationary period.


Special Requirements

Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license (for positions which require driving).


Essential Mental & Physical Requirements

Ability to communicate accurately to convey information.


Ability to operate a motor vehicle and/or be a passenger may be required for certain positions.


Working Conditions

Regularly work in an outdoor environment with exposure to heat, cold, and other weather elements.


Certain positions may participate in activities that require driving or being a passenger in an automobile or bus.
