Performs general duty firefighting work in combating and extinguishing fires for the Fire Department.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class participates in firefighting activities as a member of a firefighting crew in responding to fire alarms and calls. Primary duties include either nozzle operation or responsibility for hydrant and water hose connection. Some independent judgment and initiative are exercised in applying modern firefighting procedures and practices in combating fires. Some public contact is required in the performance of employee’s duties. Duties are performed under the usual hazards of firefighting work. Employee is supervised closely by a superior officer. Work is evaluated through observation, inspection, and discussion.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
  1. Rides on fire truck to scene of fire, lays and connects hose lines, makes hydrant connections and operates nozzles to direct stream of water on fire.
  2. Makes openings in burning buildings for ventilation and entrance to combat fires.
  3. Rescues persons overcome by fire and smoke and administers first aid and resuscitation to injured persons.
  4. Acts as relief driver and relief water pump operator.
  5. Participates in drills and training sessions in firefighting practices and procedures, first aid, and in municipal street and hydrant locations.
  6. Cleans, services, maintains, and makes minor repairs to firefighting vehicles and equipment.
  7. Keeps fire station in orderly condition by cleaning furniture, fixtures, and interior of station.
  8. May be assigned to additional duties depending on ability. Examples: Fire Instructor, Dispatcher, Driver, Mechanic, Housekeeper.
  9. Performs related work as assigned.
  10. Performs other duties that may be assigned by a superior officer.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of the following:

  1. City geography and the locations of hydrants and street names.
  2. Modern firefighting principles, practices, and procedures.
  3. First aid principles and skill in their application.
  4. Skill in the operation and maintenance of the various types of equipment used by the Fire Department.
  5. Ability to learn dispatching codes and to dispatch emergency calls.
  6. Ability to accept firefighting discipline and operational routine and to cooperate with officers and other firefighters.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. The preferred applicant will possess the following education, certifications, licenses, etc.:

  • North Carolina Hazardous Materials Level I Responder
  • North Carolina TIMS
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Clean criminal background
  • Must be at least 18 years old
