Job summary

Syracuse University is seeking part-time instructors to teach 4-credit beginning and/or intermediate Spanish courses (SPA 101-202) for Fall 2026. Appointment begins August 17, 2026, with classes starting August 24, 2026.

Offer contingent on enrollment and funding, with on-campus in-person duties required. Responsibilities include syllabus development, materials ordering, lectures and assignments, and maintaining office hours.

Qualifications

  • Native or near-native fluency required.
  • Experience teaching at university level preferred.
  • Experience with communicative, proficiency-oriented language instruction preferred.
  • Familiarity with flipped classroom methodology preferred.
  • Experience integrating instructional technology, including AI-supported language learning tools, into language instruction preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
  • Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours of two hours per week.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the class.
  • Meet all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet with your class due to illness or emergency, reschedule and inform the department chair.
  • Working with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.
  • Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
  • Grading student assignments and exams promptly; providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed evaluations.
  • Completing all other course-related duties as outlined by department policies for part-time instructors.
  • Building a positive rapport with the students and faculty.

Pay Range

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics at Syracuse University is seeking part-time instructor(s) to teach 4-credit section(s) of beginning and/or intermediate Spanish in the fall 2026 semester, which begins August 24, 2026 (appointment begins on August 17, 2026). Offer is contingent upon sufficient enrollment.

Spanish I ( SPA 101) 4 credits: Introductory proficiency-based course which prepares students to understand, speak, read, and write in culturally authentic contexts. Activities are conducted in Spanish.

Spanish II ( SPA 102) 4 credits: Continuing proficiency-based course which develops communicative abilities in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in culturally authentic contexts. Activities are conducted in Spanish.

Spanish III ( SPA 201) 4 credits: Continuing proficiency-based course which refines and expands previously acquired linguistic skills in culturally authentic contexts. Activities are conducted in Spanish.

Spanish IV ( SPA 202) 4 credits: Continuing proficiency-based course which focuses on reading, discussing, and analyzing authentic texts as a basis for the expression and interpretation of meaning. Conducted in Spanish.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per-credit-rate-history within the hiring department. All positions and offers are subject to funding availability and enrollment.

  • Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Completing all other course related duties as outlined by your department’s policies for part‑time instructors.
  • Building a positive rapport with the students and faculty.
