Job description

Part‑Time Faculty – Physics

Portland Community College is accepting applications to be considered for part‑time faculty assignments in Physics. The department will review applications in this pool as the need arises for new part‑time faculty. This is an interest pool; applicants may be considered for substitute assignments as well as full‑term class assignments.

Program & Who We Are Looking For

To be part of our Physics program, you will be asked to list the current PCC courses that you would be able to teach. Learn more about our program at https://www.pcc.edu/programs/physics/ and please also review the PCC Course Catalog for this subject area.

We are looking for qualified individuals who can support our commitment to high‑quality, accessible education in the Portland metropolitan area.

Instructor Qualifications

For PHY 101, 102, 103, 201, 202, 203, 211, 212, 213 – Lecture and Lab:

  • Master’s degree in Physics OR Master’s degree in related areas.
  • 30 quarter hours graduate credit in physics.
  • Related areas approved by the Physics SAC: Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, etc.), Math or any science other than physics, Math Education, Physics (or other science) Education, Secondary Science Education.

For PHY 121, 122, 123 – Lecture and Lab:

  • Master’s degree in one of the following: Astronomy, Physics, Science Education, Earth/Space Sciences, Planetary Sciences, Secondary School Science Education, Geology.
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in any of the above subject areas with 30 graduate hours in Astronomy, Earth/Space Sciences, Planetary Sciences, Physics, General Science, or any combination thereof.
  • Background in astronomy as demonstrated by academic coursework, teaching experience, industrial (non‑teaching) experience, research, grants, professional experience, or any combination thereof.
Benefits & Compensation
  • Eligible for Oregon Sick Leave and retirement savings plans.
  • Part‑time faculty generally start at Step 1 of the current salary schedule, with hourly rates determined by the type of course taught (Lecture, Lab, or Lecture/Lab).
