The City of Falls Church Building Safety Division is recruiting for a full-time Combination Plan Reviewer-Inspector with electrical experience. The individual selected will review electrical plans and perform combination construction inspections as a technical assistant to the Building Official in the enforcement of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.

The City of Falls Church, Virginia, located less than seven miles from Washington D.C., is a unique and historic city. The city is experiencing transformative growth, especially in its commercial districts, which are being redeveloped with higher densities, mixed uses, and walkable, bike-friendly designs. The selected candidate will be a self-motivated individual who has or will quickly obtain the necessary certifications to review electrical plans and perform inspections, including all trades in a small (2.2 square mile), fast-growing, diverse, well-educated urban jurisdiction.

Responsibilities:

1. Acts as a technical assistant to the Building Official, enforcing the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, the Virginia Rehabilitation Code, the Virginia Maintenance Code, and the Virginia Amusement Device Regulations.
2. Performs electrical plan reviews and assists with commercial combination plan reviews (building, plumbing, energy efficiency, fire alarm, and fire suppression).
3. Performs residential inspections for one- and two-family dwellings.
4. Performs damage assessments and safety inspections of damaged structures.
5. Performs maintenance code inspections of existing buildings on a complaint basis.
6. Coordinates with the Fire Marshal, the Health Department, and city staff on full code and maintenance inspections.
7. Issues warnings, violation notices, and stop-work orders.
8. Answers questions from private contractors and builders concerning code.
9. Documents inspections and plan reviews and maintains records in accordance with division policies.
10. Assists in scheduling inspections and coordinates with other inspectors to optimize efficiency.
11. Attends meetings, conferences, and testifies in court on code violation cases.
12. Obtains and maintains pertinent State and ICC certifications and participates in regular training.
13. Coordinates with other departments and divisions within the city.
14. Performs related tasks as required.

Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or GED.
2. Certified by the Commonwealth of Virginia or ICC as a code inspector or plan reviewer.
3. At least four years of experience in construction or inspection-related fields, with thorough knowledge of building materials, methods, and stages of construction.
4. Ability to read and interpret plans accurately and to coordinate with construction teams and the public.
5. Demonstrated firmness and tact in enforcing building codes.
6. Plans examiner certification for Electric plus additional trade certifications.
7. Combination residential inspector certification and commercial electrical inspector certification, plus at least one additional commercial inspection certification.
8. Equivalent training and experience may be considered.

Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM with some flexibility. This is a part-time position working less than 20 hours per week.

Salary & Benefits: $60.00 per hour. This is a part-time role without fringe benefits.
