Job summary

Tidewater Community College is seeking an Assistant Teacher for the Child Development Center in Norfolk. The part-time position supports Lead Teachers and ensures quality early childhood practices in line with Virginia licensing and NAEYC standards.

Requirements include being at least 18, a high school diploma or equivalent, a child development credential preferred, and the ability to lift 40 pounds. Center hours are 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, 29 hours weekly.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• A state-recognized child development credential is preferred.
• Ability to supervise children from 6 weeks to 12 years old.
• Knowledge of activity planning for child development centers.
• Ability to communicate effectively with children using approved methods.
• Ability to communicate with parents, faculty, and staff.
• Knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing children's materials and play areas.
• Ability to lift and maintain 40 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Assist with implementing planned lessons to support learning and development.
• Support health and safety measures in the classroom.
• Serve meals in family-style dining settings where applicable.
• Maintain supervision and accountability of children in care.
• Maintain appropriate child-to-teacher ratios.
• Help arrange snacks or meals as needed.
• Prepare and maintain indoor/outdoor activity areas and materials.
• Interact with children using approved guidance techniques.
• Observe participants for signs of illness or neglect and report as directed.
• Mandatory reporter to Child Protective Services when required by policy.
• Interact professionally with staff, parents, and community members.
• Provide parents with daily verbal or written feedback.
