Job summary

Sylvania seeks a dedicated Custodian for the 2nd shift at Plainfield Central Middle School to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students and staff.

Responsibilities include general housekeeping, waste disposal, floor care, dusting, and basic light maintenance. The role requires physical stamina and the ability to follow instructions and operate cleaning equipment.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of general housekeeping techniques and light maintenance.
• Ability to read and follow basic operating instructions.
• Completes tasks and can operate equipment needed for assigned work.
• Heavy physical effort including lifting up to 50 lbs and extensive standing/walking.

Responsibilities

• Performs general cleaning of lavatories, classrooms, offices, gym, and other areas.
• Empties waste and disposes of recyclables properly.
• Cleans floors by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and buffing.
• Dusts surfaces such as window sills, cabinets, and walls.
• Cleans stairwells, handrails, and foyers; maintains locker rooms and fixtures.
• Cleans drinking fountains and windows; removes graffiti and spots from fabrics.
• Assists with light maintenance tasks and ensures building fire safety and security.

Qualifications

Has at least limited experience as a school custodian or the equivalent in other institutions or firms.

1. Possesses knowledge in the ability to perform the basic techniques of general housekeeping and light maintenance.
2. Reads basic operating instructions and understands and follows instructions.
3. Completes assigned tasks, and is able to run all equipment necessary to complete assigned work in a timely fashion.
4. Heavy physical effort (lift/carry up to 50 lbs.). Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking. Pushes/pulls or moves/lifts heavy equipment/supplies. Manual dexterity and mobility. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.

General Description

Provides a clean, safe, attractive, comfortable atmosphere for students and personnel.

General Responsibilities

1. Performs general housekeeping and cleaning of the building in any designated lavatory, classroom, office, gym, etc.
2. Empties waste receptacles, recyclables and disposes of waste in proper dumpsters.
3. Cleans floor areas by sweeping, dry mopping, vacuuming, wet mopping, buffing, etc.
4. Performs other janitorial duties such as dusting window sills, moldings, cabinets, desks, paneling, walls, etc.
5. Cleans stairwells, handrails, foyers, lockers, etc.
6. Cleans lavatories and locker rooms by thoroughly scrubbing all fixtures and disinfecting every night. Also cleans and polishes mirrors and replaces all expendable products.
7. Cleans and disinfects all drinking fountains.
8. Cleans window glass in all classroom doors, entrances, offices, foyers, etc.
9. Removes spots from rugs, curtains, etc.
10. Removes graffiti from lockers, walls, desks, chairs, etc.
11. Assumes responsibility for the general fire safety and security of the building and handles light maintenance (light bulbs, tightening fixtures, etc.)
12. Removes snow and ice from walks and steps in winter months.
13. Performs other such tasks and assumes other such duties as the Administration, Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds or Lead Custodian may assign from time to time.
