Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Sweep, dust, arrange furniture, clean and set up for activities.
  • Clean walls, woodwork, windows and polish metal surfaces; maintain floors.
  • Sanitize restrooms and locker rooms; mop and maintain facilities.
  • Perform minor repairs; operate HVAC, electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Assist with lawns, landscaping, snow/ice removal and playgrounds.
  • Assist with event setup/teardown and security at shift end.
  • Attend in-service training on safety and procedures.
  • Deliver items and respond to safety concerns to maintain operations.
  • Inspect facilities for safety and maintenance needs; report issues.
  • Work at heights up to 12 feet; lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Prepare facilities for daily operations and secure building when done.
  • Perform other duties as assigned; see work schedule attached.

Job Summary

The job of Elementary School Custodian is done for the purposes of maintaining an attractive, sanitary, safe facility for students, staff, and the public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities, and events; and minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure to the school district.

Reports To

Principal, Custodian Supervisor, Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, and other Administrative Staff.

Terms of Employment

Salary, benefits, and work year as established in the Custodian/Maintenance Contract.

Salary Range

$43, 284.77 + (night differential)

Responsibilities
  • Sweeps, dusts, arranges furniture, empties trash and pencil sharpeners, cleans chalkboards and sets up for activities. Washes walls, woodwork and windows, and cleans and polishes metal surfaces. Cleans and maintains hard and soft surface floors. Wet mops and spot cleans hard and soft surface floors. Cleans, sanitizes and deodorizes restrooms and locker rooms.
  • Performs minor repair maintenance. Operates heating, A/C, ventilation, electrical and mechanical systems. Operations will be limited to turning equipment on/off and/or setting day/night cycles. Observes and reports needed repair of equipment, furnishings, fixtures, building and site.
  • Assists in the maintenance of lawns, landscaping, concrete and blacktop surfaces and playgrounds, including pedestrian walkways snow and ice removal.
  • Assists with set ups and tear downs for school activities.
  • Operates security systems and secures building at the conclusion of shift.
  • Works a revised schedule and substitutes for other custodial staff when necessary.
  • Shares responsibility for holiday, extended day and weekend activities with other custodial staff.
  • Attends in-service training (e.g., instruction on blood-borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) for the purpose of receiving information on new and/or improved procedures.
  • Delivers various items (e.g., supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of distributing materials to the appropriate parties.
  • Helps respond to immediate safety and/or operating concerns (e.g., facility damage, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning physical and educational environment.
  • Inspects school district facilities for the purpose of ensuring the site is suitable for safe operations and maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and identifying any repairs that may be necessary due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
  • Performs work at heights of up to 12 feet using ladders and/or scaffolding for the purpose of cleaning, changing light bulbs, replacing ceiling tiles, etc.
  • Lifts up to 30 pounds unassisted for the purpose of lifting equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks.
  • Prepares school district facilities for daily operations (e.g., opening gates and building access doors, disarming security systems, raising flags, placing crosswalk signs, performing minor repairs, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring school district facilities are operational and safe.
  • Secures school district facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability to the school district.
  • Services job-related machinery/equipment (e.g., adjusting, cleaning, and oiling vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, buffers, ets.) for the purpose of maintaining equipment in good working condition. Also changes brushes, pads, rollers, etc. on equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient functioning of the work unit.
