Job summary

Empowerment Academy Charter School in Jersey City Heights is seeking a part-time Custodian for the school year. Working hours are 9:00am to 2:00pm on school days, with duties focused on cleaning and upkeep throughout the building.

You will vacuum, mop, wipe surfaces, restrooms, and help maintain overall appearance when classes are in session. A clean background check is required, and lifting up to 55 pounds is part of the job.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED is required.
• Able to pass DOE criminal background check.
• Low Pressure Boilers License / Black Seal is a plus.
• Experience working in a school setting is a plus.
• Effective interpersonal skills are important.
• Ability to lift 55 pounds to shoulder height occasionally.

Responsibilities

• Perform major cleaning tasks such as vacuuming, wet-mopping, sweeping, dusting, and trash removal.
• Clean and disinfect restrooms, floors, fixtures, and surfaces.
• Ensure doors and windows are properly locked and secure.
• Go up and down stairs, bend and stand as needed in daily shifts.
• Report major repairs to the Head Custodian and maintain hallway cleanliness when classes aren’t in session.
• Relate professionally with students, staff and community members.

Job description

Empowerment Academy Charter School has an opening for a part-time school year Custodian. Approximate hours: 9:00am-2:00pm on school days in the Jersey City Heights.

$18.00-$19.00/hr

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Perform major cleaning tasks such as vacuuming (using a 20 lb. vacuum daily for 3-4 hours), wet-mopping, sweeping, dusting, emptying the trash (lifting waste paper and debris - minimum of 55 lbs.) and pencil sharpeners, cleaning whiteboards, and disinfecting drinking fountains.
• Clean restrooms, including floors and all fixtures (i.e.: urinals, toilets, sinks, mirrors, partitions, and counters). Ensure restrooms are clean and disinfected.
• Ensure that all doors and windows are appropriately locked.

• Must be able to go up and downstairs and undertake bending and standing as needed in a daily shift.

• Promptly report major repairs as needed to the Head Custodian.

• Maintain the appearance of hallways throughout the building by washing and buffing floors. This work cannot be done when students are in class.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Relate in a professional manner with students, faculty, administration and community patrons.

• Carry and answer radio at all times on school grounds.

• Submit information and data as requested.

• Regularly monitor school email for pertinent communication.

• Complete paperwork as requested.

• Complete training courses as assigned.
