As a Part-time Custodian/Janitorial Worker, you’ll perform daily cleaning, general repairs, and building upkeep—ranging from floor care and plumbing fixes to event setup and snow removal. This hands‑on role is essential in ensuring our community spaces are well‑maintained and ready to serve residents year‑round.

Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job's essential functions.

1. Other:

Must be 18 years of age or older.

• Performs custodial tasks.
• Works in the upkeep, maintenance, and repair of City facilities.
• Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, and waxes floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets.
• Washes ceilings and walls; cleans and sanitizes bathroom fixtures, doorknobs, and other common areas.
• Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork.
• Empties trash and recycling receptacles and replenishes washroom supplies.
• Replaces light bulbs.
• Proficient when using the City of Gahanna-provided technology and software, including computers, tablets, building automation systems and the asset management system.
• Maintains routine records and reports.
• Performs set-up and take-down activities for City facilities including setting up chairs, tables, and other equipment in the City’s facility rental program.
• Performs minor electrical repair work such as maintaining fans, light fixtures, and replacing light bulbs with power supply properly removed.
• Inspects and makes a variety of repairs to sinks, urinals, toilets and other plumbing fixtures and repairs leaks in pipes.
• Removes old paint, and/or applies paint to structures or surfaces.
• Moves furniture and office equipment.
• May unload trucks delivering materials and supplies and store them in assigned areas.
• May climb ladders and work at levels of elevation utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment.
• May operate equipment such as floor cleaners and power washers.
• May perform work that requires maneuvering in and out of tight spaces and confined areas.
• Makes minor repairs and reports the need for major repairs.
• This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Participates in activities to remove snow and ice from building entrances, steps, landings, sidewalks, and ramps, including shoveling snow and application of ice melting materials.

Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.

Knowledge of:

• Safe and effective cleaning methods, floor care techniques, and sanitation repairs.
• Tools, materials, and equipment used in the essential job functions.
• Methods and practices of equipment and tools, construction, repair, custodial work, and/or maintenance in the area assigned.
• Hazards of the work and the necessary safety precautions.
• Common hand and power tools, including but not limited to, jackhammers, concrete saws, hand drills, sawzalls, string trimmers, and other construction equipment.
• OSHA safety regulations, hazard communication, and proper use of personal protective equipment.

Skill in:

• Use of the equipment and tools including the safe operation of custodial and maintenance equipment.
• Basic experience in the maintenance, repair, and/or construction of facilities.
• Operation of equipment in connection with the above tasks.
• The use of general sanitation practices.
• Use of computers, tablets, work order software, and building systems provided by the City.
• Maintaining basic maintenance logs, work orders, and supply inventories.
• Organizing tasks to meet deadlines and responding to urgent maintenance and/or facility needs.
• Diagnosing issues with facilities and identifying when to repair or elevate larger fixes.
• Keeping track of supplies, cleaning and maintenance scheduling, and preparing facilities for events.
