Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers seeks a Part-time Physician at Haynesville Correctional Center to provide professional medical care and medication management to offenders, with a nurse manager overseeing the health services system on site.

Responsibilities include diagnosing and treating illnesses, prescribing safe and cost-effective therapies, and educating inmates on self-management. This role is limited to 1,500 hours/year and does not include state benefits.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited medical college.
• Completion of an approved residency in a primary care specialty.
• Licensed to practice medicine in Virginia.
• Extensive knowledge of information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities.
• Comprehensive knowledge of mental illness.
• Comprehensive knowledge of current DSM criteria.
• Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of practice.
• Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
• Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional medical care and medication management to offenders with nursing staff support.
• Analyze and interpret patients' histories, symptoms, and diagnostic information to develop diagnoses.
• Diagnose or treat acute health care problems (illnesses, infections, injuries).
• Prescribe medications considering safety and cost as legally authorized.
• Educate patients about self-management of illnesses.
• Be a primary member of the institution’s internal health services multidisciplinary team.
