Job summary

Catholic Charities of Baltimore's Our Daily Bread is seeking a Cook to perform daily cooking and meal preparation of large batches in accordance with recipes and regulations. The role coordinates kitchen operations, directs staff and volunteers, and supports nutrition goals within budget constraints.

Requirements include 1 year of cooking experience, ServSafe certification (within six months), and strong food-safety knowledge. No remote work; weekend shifts on a 6am–1:30pm schedule.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Ensure health regulations compliance and protect products from receipt to service.
• Prepare food per safe handling practices and report violations.
• Receive, store, and document food donations and inventory.
• Plan menus within budget and dietary guidelines while using donated food.
• Train kitchen staff and volunteers; maintain sanitary conditions.
• Maintain records, inventory levels, and monitor stock to reduce waste.
• Operate kitchen equipment safely and work independently in daily operations.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Catholic Charities of Baltimore, Our Daily Bread is seeking a Cook to perform daily cooking and meal preparation of large batches of food in accordance with standardized recipes, current federal, state, and local regulations as well as established policies and procedures. Coordinates the daily operation of the kitchen to include providing directions to staff and volunteers assigned.

Schedule

Saturday - Sunday 6am - 1:30pm

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Ensures compliance with health regulations and protects products throughout the service cycle from receiving to service, while being responsible for addressing any non-compliance issues and implementing corrective actions.
• Ensures that all food is prepared and served in accordance with safe food handling practices, and is held accountable for maintaining proper procedures and reporting violations.
• Receives and properly stores food donations, ensuring accurate documentation and accountability for inventory management.
• Plans menus as required, ensuring apportionments, good nutrition, and the utilization of donated food, while being focused on adhering to dietary guidelines and budget constraints.
• Orients and trains kitchen workers to provide assistance with meal preparation, serving, and cleanup, while monitoring their performance and ensuring compliance with training guidelines.
• Ensures that sanitary conditions are maintained and cleans areas and equipment, while addressing any deficiencies and implementing corrective measures.
• Maintains records and statistics associated with kitchen operations, ensuring accuracy for all documented information.
• Maintains proper inventory levels, taking responsibility for monitoring stock, reducing waste, and reporting shortages.
• Works independently focused on daily kitchen operations, while being ensuring efficiency in food quality, and adherence to safety standards.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Program Specific

• Trains residential clients using a coaching model in the handling, preparation, and serving / delivery of meals.
• Addresses areas to help residential clients overcome obstacles to reach desired outcomes in kitchen assignments and operations.

Education & Experience Requirements

• 1 year of cooking experience in commercial kitchen and/or restaurant environment.

Certification/Licensure

• ServSafe® Food Handler certification. May be obtained within six months of employment and maintained thereafter.

Knowledge of other Microsoft Office applications, for example Word, Excel PowerPoint, Teams, and OneDrive is preferred.

• Adjusting or moving objects up to fifty pounds (50#) in all directions, which may include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or repositioning items as necessary to perform job duties.
• Engaging in communication with others to exchange information, which may involve speaking, listening, writing, or using electronic communication methods to ensure clear and effective understanding. This includes both verbal and non-verbal interactions with colleagues, clients, or external parties.
• Repetitive motions involving the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, including tasks such as typing, data entry, or handling small objects. These repetitive activities may occur throughout the workday and require attention to ergonomics to ensure comfort and minimize strain.
• Operating kitchen machinery and/or power equipment to complete tasks, ensuring proper handling, safety protocols, and maintenance procedures.
• May involve working in various temperature conditions, including heat and cold. Employees may be exposed to these elements for extended periods. Apparel such as warm layers will be necessary to ensure comfort and safety while performing job duties.
• Due to the essential nature of business, incumbent must have reliable means of transportation and be available for work, regardless of weather conditions.
