Job summary

Sermetro in Detroit seeks a Construction Instructor (Part-Time) to deliver apprenticeship readiness through a building trades curriculum. You will assess learners, teach demolition, framing, blueprint reading, and safety, and manage hands-on projects in a workshop and on-site setting.

The role emphasizes engaging diverse learners, updating curriculum with input from employers, and mentoring a student cohort within the ReBuild Detroit program.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree preferred or journey-level experience; minimum of journey-level experience or three years as a certified teacher in a construction training program.
• OSHA 10-Hour certificate preferred for construction industry safety.
• Licensed contractor with experience in construction management preferred.
• Two to three years of instruction or training experience with at-risk youth or in an adult basic education program.
• Operating procedures, laws, materials, and safety measures in construction.
• Proficient in construction trades math skills.
• Strong communication skills and ability to engage diverse learners.

Responsibilities

• Provide initial academic assessments to identify participants’ learning styles.
• Teach the building trades curriculum including demolition, framing, interior work, blueprint reading, etc.
• Follow and update curriculum based on employer feedback.
• Instruct on hand tools and power tools usage and safety.
• Coordinate and supervise hands-on projects on and off-site.
• Monitor progress and provide feedback to participants and program manager.
• Assist in developing job opportunities for trainees and help set career goals.
• Maintain participant records and progress reports as required by funding sources.
• Mentor student cohorts and communicate regularly with the program services manager.
