Part Time Club Esports Coach
Position Summary
The Club Esports Coach is responsible for all aspects of the program from recruitment and coaching of players of game titles offered, scheduling of contests, oversight of team competition considerate of league rules, facility and equipment maintenance, program development and outreach activities. The coach is responsible for representing Washtenaw Community College positively at all times and providing a positive experience for all athletes.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct scheduled tryout sessions and plan for and conduct practices and competitions.
- Advise team in esports rules, game strategies, and performance principles.
- Focus on the improvement of players and the team while keeping participation enjoyable.
- Instruct and facilitate pre- and post-competition procedures and communicate any abrupt situations/issues.
- Hold yourself and your players to high standards of sportsmanlike conduct and communicate professionally with officials/opposing teams.
- Ensure players conduct themselves in accordance with WCC students’ rights and responsibilities and abide by the Esports Handbook.
- Responsible for maintaining and turning in all college issued equipment.
- Using the esports program, educate players about discipline, time management, teamwork, and academic success.
- Only allow players who attend practice at least once that week to compete in that week’s competition except with prior approval from the Coordinator of Esports.
- Only allow eligible student‑athletes from the team’s roster to participate in scrimmages and competitions.
- Communicate regularly and positively with student‑athletes regarding the season, sport, and any concerns.
- Oversee esports operations and connect with local and regional Esports community to grow the sport in the area.
- Manage the esports team physical space, including facility scheduling and equipment maintenance.
- Collaborate with assigned part‑time staff to promote esports and recruit athletes from WCC’s student body.
- Develop competitive schedules for gaming teams encouraging participation from all members.
- Establish annual community events such as camps, tournaments or opportunities to raise funds through esports.
Related Duties
- Communicate with players and spectators regarding schedules and changes in cooperation with the Sports Office.
- Refer questions, concerns, and student‑athlete cut/removal or equipment requests to the Coordinator of Esports.
- Provide the Sports Office with necessary player paperwork, including waivers and weekly reports.
- Responsibly request, maintain and distribute competition related reports and attendance to the Sports Office each week and other required entities.
- Return calls and answer student interest questions as requested by the Coordinator of Esports.
- Report tournament results within 24 hours of a competition to the Sports Office.
- Assist with recruitment, first approved by the Coordinator of Esports.
- Understand and follow Esports Handbook guidelines at all times.
- Ensure facilities are left clean and organized after each use.
- Assist with end of season meeting or re‑cap as requested.
- Responsible for washing team uniforms or dropping them off at WCC Sports with sufficient time to wash.
- Select team captains appropriately and encourage them to meet with the Coordinator of Esports every two weeks during the season.
- Utilize technology, including AI‑enabled tools and software, to support effective performance, enhance productivity, improve communication, and support decision‑making while ensuring compliance with confidentiality, institutional policies, and applicable regulations.
- Complete all other duties as assigned.
Hours / Schedule
Practices will be held during the week after 4:00 pm. Competitions will be held throughout the week depending on the availability of the coach, team, and tournaments.
Physical Demands
Ability to frequently walk/run, stand, bend, squat, lift, push/pull and kneel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Availability to commit to the entire schedule.
- Two (2) years of experience playing esports titles including but not limited to: Valorant, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Rocket League, Overwatch.
- Knowledge of rules and skills of particular esports.
- Willingness to place emphasis on studies first and athletics second.
- Satisfactory driver’s record review.
- Satisfactory background check.
- First Aid and CPR certification (must be completed within 60 days of hire or employment authorization; renewal before expiration. College will reimburse up to $125.00 for new or renewal training with receipt and certificate).
- Ability to use workplace technology relevant to the position, including learning and leveraging emerging AI-supported tools; assess accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content, maintain confidentiality, and apply sound ethical judgment in technology use.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience.
- Two years coaching experience or significant college playing experience preferred.
