Job summary

Northcentral Technical College (NTC) in Merrill, Wisconsin, is seeking a part-time Instructional Assistant for the CDL program. The role supports CDL faculty in teaching Truck Driving (Class A) and Straight Truck (Class B) certificates at the Public Safety Center of Excellence in Merrill.

Typical hours are M–F, daytime, up to 25 hours per week. The position focuses on assisting instructors, preparing equipment, and supervising student activities to ensure safe, effective training.

Qualifications

• Two years (4,000 hours) occupational experience in trucking or related field.
• Must possess a valid Wisconsin Class A CDL and meet college insurance standards and DOT guidelines.
• Ability to work with students of varying backgrounds in an educational setting.
• Ability to provide constructive feedback and operate course software.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct support to CDL faculty during student training.
• Prepare tractors, trailers, and driving courses for student activities.
• Lead formative lab instruction when faculty are unavailable.
• Assist students with practicing driving techniques.
• Recommend safety and procedural topics to the faculty based on observations.
• Ensure students operate vehicles safely and follow procedures.
• Assist in procuring materials and setting up activities for students.
• Proctor tests, quizzes and performance assessments.
• Monitor attendance and vehicle usage.
• Maintain an inventory of instructional materials and equipment.
