Part-Time Career Exploration Instructor (Pool)

Definition: The Adult Education department has a need for Career Exploration instructors. This position supports instruction within a Pre‑Apprenticeship Program for Coach Bus Operator careers in a noncredit Adult Education setting. The instructor will guide students in developing foundational skills and understanding essential to working in public transit, including professionalism in the workplace, expectations of a career in an occupation, and the habits needed for success in training and employment. The program also includes structured learning experiences such as studying core concepts related to transit operations and participating in site visits to the VTA Bus Yard, where students gain firsthand exposure to the work environment. Overall, the course is designed to help adult learners understand the value of a career in public transit and what it takes to successfully enter and prepare for that pathway.

Assignment

This is a part‑time Associate Instructor position. The teaching assignment may require lecture‑discussion courses during day, evening or on Saturday and/or in an online/distance education format. Assignments are as needed during Spring, Summer, and/or Fall semesters.

Salary and Benefits

Salary is based on a percentage of workload, up to a maximum of 67% of a full‑time load. Salary is prorated based on an initial hiring salary range of $38,464 – $55,582 per semester and is based on academic achievement, teaching and related experience.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education – Possess one of the following:
    • Bachelor’s degree; and two years of occupational experience related to the subject of the course taught;
    • Associate degree; and six years of occupational experience related to the subject of the course taught;
    • Possession of a full‑time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in the subject matter;
    • A valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in the designated discipline;
    • The equivalent of the above.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Previous teaching experience.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction for assigned courses, including preparation, in‑class activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students outside of class, and maintenance of currency in the subjects taught.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records conforming with state requirements and college needs.
  • Submit, when due, all necessary reports such as attendance, grade reports, rosters and class schedules.
  • Follow course outlines as filed in the appropriate instruction offices.
  • Maintain office hours each week, at 0.5 hours per week per section.
  • Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
  • Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook.
  • Refer students to appropriate college sources for counseling and other student services.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the member’s area of expertise.
  • Work cooperatively within the college community.
  • Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
  • Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
  • Demonstrate respect for the dignity of each individual.
