Job summary

Charles R. Drew Charter School in Atlanta, GA is seeking a part-time bus driver to transport students to programs, athletic events, field trips and other activities in accordance with state traffic and GADOE safety regulations. This hourly role reports to the Transportation Coordinator.

Trips may occur in the morning, afternoon, evening and weekends including school breaks and summer months. The driver must have a Georgia CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsements and pass a post-hire

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Pass post-hire physical exam.
  • Georgia CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsements required.
  • Successful completion of annual safety and renewal requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Prompt and regular attendance for scheduled shifts.
  • Safe loading/unloading of passengers from buses.
  • Pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
  • Vehicle fueling and daily interior cleaning.
  • Report incidents to Transportation Coordinator.
  • Attend required training and meetings.
  • Perform basic first-aid and safety practices.
  • Operate buses and related equipment.
  • Read maps and follow route directions.
  • Knowledge of emergency evacuation techniques.
  • Assist with wheelchairs and accessibility equipment.
  • Maintain clear communication with families and staff.

Over Drew Charter School’s twenty-year history, the school has grown to serve grades PreK-12 with nearly 1,900 students in a “cradle-to-college” pipeline, including two onsite early learning partners. Position Description

Our school bus drivers support the ongoing enrichment of Drew Charter School by transporting students to regularly scheduled programs, athletic events, field trips and other activities in accordance with state traffic and GADOE safety regulations. This is a part-time hourly position. This position reports to the Transportation Coordinator.

Drew Charter School does not have traditional morning/afternoon transportation routes. Trips may take place during morning, afternoon, evening and weekends including school breaks and summer months. Trips are assigned to drivers based on the driver’s stated availability.

Role Responsibilities
  • Required to have prompt and regular attendance for scheduled shifts
  • Provides safe loading and unloading of all passengers from buses during regular transport and emergency situations
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g., fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, etc.) to ensure the safe operating condition of the vehicle and comply with mandated guidelines
  • Perform regular maintenance including fueling and daily cleaning of vehicle interior
  • Reports observations and/or incidents (e.g., discipline, bullying, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) to appropriate personnel
  • Attends regular team meetings and other required training
  • Performs basic first-aid and safety practices
  • Ability to operate vehicles, fire extinguishers, two-way radios, and other related tools
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow printed and electronic maps, directions and route descriptions
  • Knowledge of emergency evacuation techniques
  • Ability and knowledge to utilize wheelchairs, tie-downs, lifts, etc.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills including addition and subtraction
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Transportation Coordinator
Qualifications/Education

Work Experience
  • Previous experience as school bus driver in K-12 education setting, within the past two years
  • Experience within Metro Atlanta preferred
Licenses/Certifications
  • Georgia State Drivers’ CDL license with Passenger and School Bus endorsement
  • Must be able to pass Georgia basic bus driver’s certification class and maintain an annual Safety Renewal Education Program (SREP) recertification
  • Successful completion of an annual physical and agility testing with result clearance
  • Successful completion of pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and satisfactory MVR report
Compensation

$26.40/hour – Please note this is not a benefits eligible position.
