Position Summary:

Washtenaw Community College (WCC) is seeking a Part-Time Automotive Service Instructor to teach Automotive Service (ATT) credit courses that prepare students for careers in automotive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair. Instruction may take place in-person, online, hybrid, or lab-based settings, depending on program needs.

The instructor will play a critical role in ensuring students develop technical expertise, industry-relevant skills, and professional workplace habits. Additionally, the instructor must conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times, serving as a role model for WCC students by demonstrating ethical behavior, strong work ethic, and professionalism in all instructional settings.

The instructor will also actively and effectively promote safety in all lab-based courses, ensuring that students follow standardized department safety protocols and procedures while operating tools, diagnostic equipment, and vehicles.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Deliver engaging, high-quality instruction that aligns with course learning objectives and program goals.
  2. Actively and effectively promote safety in all lab-based courses, ensuring strict adherence to the department’s standardized safety protocols and procedures.
  3. Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and enforce safety measures for hazardous materials, tools, equipment operation, and vehicle handling.
  4. Conduct themselves professionally at all times, setting a positive example for students by demonstrating ethical behavior, strong work ethic, and professional conduct.
  5. Utilize diverse teaching strategies (e.g., lecture, demonstration, online tools, and hands-on lab work) to accommodate various learning styles.
  6. Ensure curriculum compliance with industry certifications such as Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) standards and best practices in automotive repair.
  7. Assess student performance effectively, using a combination of written exams, hands-on skill assessments, diagnostic exercises, and project-based learning.
  8. Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, safety training completion, and grading, ensuring compliance with college policies.
  9. Incorporate modern diagnostic tools and automotive technologies to keep course content aligned with industry advancements.
  10. Collaborate with industry professionals and maintain partnerships with automotive service businesses to align coursework with workforce needs.
  11. Stay current in the field through professional development, industry training, and compliance with ASE certification standards.
  12. Participate in curriculum development and revision efforts to ensure course content remains relevant to industry standards.
  13. Engage in continuous improvement initiatives, including program assessments and participation in the Student Opinion Questionnaire (SOQ) process.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications (Required for HLC Compliance):
Candidates must meet the following educational and certification requirements based on the specific Automotive Service (ASV) courses they teach:

  1. Option 1
    • Earned Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in Automotive Technology, Occupational Studies/Education, Technology Management (Automotive Emphasis), or a closely related field.
    • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications required, specific to the course(s) taught:
    • G1 required for general maintenance and co-op courses.
    • A1-A8 and G1 for comprehensive automotive service instruction.
    • Specialized ASE certifications (A1–A8, G1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8) as specified per individual course content.
    • Minimum of one (1) year full-time work experience in the automotive service industry.
  2. Option 2
    • Associate degree in Automotive Services Technology, Occupational Studies, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
    • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications required, as listed in Option 1.
    • Minimum of two (2) years full-time work experience in the automotive service industry.

Course-Specific ASE Certification Requirements
Instructors must possess the ASE certification(s) that directly align with the course(s) they are assigned to teach:

  1. ATT 130 – Automotive Maintenance → ASE G1 required
  2. ATT 131 – Automotive Electrical → ASE G1 and A6 required
  3. ATT 132 – Automotive Engines → ASE G1 and A1 required
  4. ATT 133 – Automotive Fuel Systems → ASE G1 and A8 required
  5. ATT 134 – Automotive Transmissions → ASE G1, A2, and A3 required
  6. ATT 135 – Facility Operations → ASE G1 required
  7. ATT 174 – ASV Co-op Education I → ASE G1 required
  8. ATT 189 – Study Problems → ASE G1 required
  9. ATT 251 – Engine Diagnosis and Repair → ASE G1 and A1 required
  10. ATT 254 – Suspension and Steering → ASE G1 and A4 required
  11. ATT 255 – Brakes → ASE G1 and A5 required
  12. ATT 256 – Electrical and Electronic Systems → ASE G1 and A6 required
  13. ATT 257 – Heating and Air Conditioning Systems → ASE G1 and A7 required
  14. ATT 258 – Engine Drivability → ASE G1 and A8 required
  15. ATT 266 – Advanced Transmissions → ASE G1, A2, and A3 required
  16. ATT 274 – ASV Co-op Education II → ASE G1 required
  17. ATT 277 – Automotive Powertrain Systems → ASE G1, A1, A6, and A8 required
  18. ATT 279 – Automotive Dynamometer and Test → ASE G1, A1, A6, and A8 required

Instructors applying for this position should hold ASE certifications aligned with the course(s) they intend to teach, ensuring compliance with both industry standards and institutional accreditation requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Recent, successful post-secondary teaching experience in Automotive Service courses.
• Experience with advanced vehicle diagnostics, hybrid/electric vehicle maintenance, and emerging automotive technologies.
• Online, hybrid, or remote teaching experience utilizing modern instructional technologies.

Professional Instructor (Non-Adjunct) $995 per one (1) course contact hour. The course contact hour divided by 15 equals the clock hour rate (i.e., $995/15 = $66.34). Normally a three (3) credit hour course in either Fall or Winter Semester would typically equal three (3) course contact hours.
