Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health is seeking a part-time Interpreter for American Sign Language (ASL) to interpret for deaf and hard-of-hearing patients across Lahey Hospital and Medical Center sites. You will schedule appointments, assist with billing questions, and support cultural understanding in patient interactions.

Essential duties include providing ASL interpretation, coordinating language services, training staff, and maintaining documentation.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Deaf Education required.
• National Certification for Deaf Interpreters required.
• Health Care Interpreter Training Certificate preferred.

Responsibilities

• Interpret for deaf patients in interactions with care providers and hospital personnel.
• Assist patients in scheduling appointments and resolving billing problems.
• Schedule future appointments according to interpreter availability.
• Identify and facilitate understanding of cultural differences impacting communication.
• Represent Interpreter Services at Community Outreach events.
• Review and schedule interpreter requests for languages not served by staff.
• Prepare, route and file related forms and reports.
• Educate hospital staff on working with an interpreter and cross-cultural communication.
• Maintain computerized records of daily activities and encounters.
• Work with colleagues to improve service delivery systems.
• Orient and supervise trainee interpreters or volunteers.
• Maintain professional competency through ongoing education.
• Educate clinics on serving our ASL population to comply with ADA requirements.
• Interpret tactile for deaf/blind patients at Burlington and Peabody sites.
