Job description

Part-Time After-School Driver
YAS! Youth After School Program

DMR Adventures is seeking safe, dependable, and experienced drivers for YAS!, our weekday after-school program in Charlottesville, Virginia.

YAS! provides transportation from local schools to DMR Adventures program locations, where students participate in supervised after-school programming, theatre, arts activities, and enrichment.

Drivers play an essential role in helping students arrive safely, calmly, and on time. We are looking for individuals who take transportation safety seriously, communicate professionally, and enjoy working with children.

Schedule

This is a part-time, school-year position working Monday through Friday while local schools are in session.

The typical daily schedule is:

  • Start time: approximately 1:45–2:00 p.m.
  • End time: approximately 3:15–3:30 p.m.

Exact routes and times may vary by school assignment, traffic, dismissal schedules, and program needs.

Applicants may indicate whether they are available all five weekdays or only on specific recurring days. Consistent weekly availability is strongly preferred.

Drivers are generally not scheduled on school holidays, teacher workdays, weather closures, or other days when the schools on their route are closed.

Position Responsibilities

Drivers may be responsible for:

  • Picking up students from assigned local schools
  • Transporting students safely to designated DMR Adventures program locations
  • Operating a passenger car or van safely and responsibly
  • Arriving at each assigned school before dismissal or pickup time
  • Following assigned routes, pickup procedures, and transportation schedules
  • Confirming that the correct students are present before departing
  • Maintaining accurate student pickup or attendance information
  • Ensuring that students use seat belts and follow vehicle-safety expectations
  • Maintaining a calm, respectful, and age-appropriate environment in the vehicle
  • Communicating clearly with students, school staff, families, and DMR Adventures staff
  • Reporting delays, absences, route concerns, vehicle concerns, or unusual situations promptly
  • Following DMR Adventures policies for transportation, student supervision, emergencies, and incident reporting
  • Completing basic pre-trip and post-trip vehicle checks
  • Checking the entire vehicle after each route to ensure that no student or personal item has been left behind
  • Keeping the vehicle reasonably clean and reporting maintenance or safety concerns
  • Following all traffic laws and avoiding phone use or other distractions while driving
  • Protecting confidential student and family information

Drivers must never leave students unattended except as specifically permitted by DMR Adventures’ established procedures.

Working With Students

Drivers should be able to build a warm and positive rapport with children while maintaining clear safety expectations.

The ideal candidate can:

  • Greet students warmly and help them feel comfortable
  • Communicate directions clearly and calmly
  • Reinforce seat-belt and vehicle-safety rules consistently
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries
  • Respond patiently to questions, excitement, noise, or minor disagreements
  • Redirect behavior without becoming harsh or distracted
  • Recognize when a student concern should be reported to program staff
  • Remain focused on safe driving while managing the normal activity of transporting children

The driver’s first responsibility is always the safe operation of the vehicle. Significant behavior concerns should be communicated to DMR Adventures staff rather than handled while the vehicle is moving.

Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • A valid driver’s license
  • A strong and insurable driving record
  • Demonstrated safe and responsible driving experience
  • Comfort driving a passenger car or van
  • Reliable availability for assigned weekday routes
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Dependability and punctuality
  • Good judgment and the ability to remain calm under pressure
  • A positive and respectful approach to working with children
  • The ability to follow established routes, schedules, and safety procedures
  • A reliable way to communicate with DMR Adventures staff before and after routes

A Commercial Driver’s License is not required.

Experience transporting children, driving passenger vans, working in schools, supporting youth programs, or serving families is strongly preferred.

Selected candidates must successfully complete all required background screening, driving-record review, and any transportation or safety training required by DMR Adventures.

Employment is contingent upon the candidate remaining legally authorized and insurable to operate the assigned vehicle.

Physical and Work Requirements

The position may require:

  • Entering and exiting a passenger car or van repeatedly
  • Sitting and driving for the duration of the assigned route
  • Turning to visually confirm that students are seated and secured
  • Assisting with doors, seat belts, backpacks, and routine vehicle procedures
  • Walking through or checking the vehicle after each route
  • Working outdoors briefly during school pickup in varying weather conditions

Reasonable accommodations may be available for qualified applicants.

Compensation

This is a part-time, hourly position.

Pay: $16-20/hr

Because routes are short, applicants should understand that the position generally provides approximately 1½ hours of work per school day. Additional hours may occasionally be available through other DMR Adventures programs or responsibilities, but they are not guaranteed.

DMR Adventures welcomes applicants from a wide range of backgrounds, identities, experiences, and perspectives.
