Lancaster County Parks and Recreation is hiring Part-Time After-School Counselors to supervise and engage children in grades K–5 during the after-school program. Counselors will guide daily activities, assist with homework, run games and crafts, supervise snacks, and ensure a safe, welcoming environment at one of several recreation centers.

Standard hours are typically 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM, with extended hours possible during school closings or events.

Qualifications

• Must have strong communication, leadership and teamwork skills.
• Dependable, punctual and able to participate in recreational activities.
• Must be at least 18 years old and have reliable transportation.
• Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.
• Experience with children ages 5–11 in structured settings is preferred.

Lancaster County Parks and Recreation is seeking enthusiastic, responsible, and caring individuals to join our team as Part-Time After-School Counselors. Counselors are responsible for supervising and engaging with children in grades K–5 during the after-school program. This role involves guiding children through daily activities, assisting with homework, facilitating games and crafts, serving snacks, and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.

Counselors will be assigned to one of the following sites:

• Indian Land Recreation Center
• Springdale Recreation Center
• Buford Recreation Center
• Andrew Jackson Recreation Center

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervise children in grades K–5 in a safe, structured environment.
• Assist with daily homework and academic activities.
• Lead and participate in indoor and outdoor games, crafts, and group activities.
• Foster a nurturing, positive environment that promotes cooperation, self-esteem, and good behavior.
• Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants at all times.
• Distribute and supervise snack time, ensuring cleanliness and proper nutrition guidelines.
• Maintain clean program areas, including gyms and activity rooms.
• Communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff.
• Follow all departmental policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
• Report any incidents, concerns, or issues to the Recreation Coordinator in a timely manner.
• Assist with extended hours during school closings, special events, early dismissals, holidays, field trips, and other camps as needed.

Work Schedule

• Standard Hours: Monday through Friday, 1:30 PM – 6:00 PM
• Extended Hours: May vary during school closings, teacher workdays, special events, and center weekend programs

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 3 months –1 year of experience working with children ages 5–11 in a structured setting (school, camp, childcare, recreation, etc.).
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must possess strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to actively participate in recreational activities and games.
• Must be dependable, punctual, and have a positive attitude.
• Must hold a valid South Carolina driver's license and have reliable transportation.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

• Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings, including playgrounds, gymnasiums, and activity rooms.
• Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs., bend, run, walk, and engage in physical activity for extended periods.
• May be exposed to varying weather conditions during outdoor play.
