Mental Health Cooperative, Inc. (MHC) was formed in 1993 to serve individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. Since then, we have expanded our services to children and adolescents with severe emotional disorders across Middle and East Tennessee.

Job Title:

Advanced Practice Nurse PMHNP (Substance Use Services)

Position Summary:

The Nurse Practitioner, under physician direction, is responsible for performing medical examinations, prescribing emergency medicine, managing phases of severe addiction, coordinating health management, and assisting the clinic physician in delivering low-threshold buprenorphine treatment to patients.

Schedule:

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8 am - 4:30 pm

Responsibilities:
  • Provide emergency medicine services including prescribing, dispensing, or transmitting medications under physician guidance, in accordance with procedures and regulations.
  • Distribute and recover harm reduction supplies, and provide education and support on safer drug use.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations, including overdoses, with proper training.
  • Deliver timely and effective services to clients.
  • Attend ongoing monthly internal trainings.
  • Provide counseling, guidance, and health instructions to patients and their families.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Assist in quality assurance activities.
  • Seek supervision from supervising MD as needed.
  • Work as part of a team in patient care and daily activities.
  • Perform physical examinations following employer guidelines.
  • Participate in teaching activities as appropriate.
  • Complete clinical documentation promptly, adhering to agency standards.
Essential Skills and Experience:
  • Successful completion of a formal Nurse Practitioner Training Program (PMHNP).
  • Knowledge of the served consumer groups.
  • Understanding of HCV/HIV, infectious diseases, addiction, CPR/First Aid, harm reduction models, and best practices.
  • Ability to handle complex, emotional, or stressful situations.
  • Client- and mission-centered approach.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective listening and solution offering without judgment.
  • Diplomacy in politically sensitive environments.
Essential Requirements:
  • Valid Tennessee Driver’s License.
  • Acceptable criminal background check.
  • Cell phone.

Clinical Skills:

  • Up-to-date knowledge of psychiatry and psychopharmacology.
  • High communication skills with consumers.
  • Familiarity with current journals and publications.

Communication:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with various levels of consumers and coworkers.
  • Proficiency in written evaluations.

Time Management/Organization:

  • Meet deadlines and prepare for meetings.
  • Enter progress notes and verbal orders timely.
  • Plan PTO in advance.
  • Be flexible to adapt to different clinical settings (Routine, Urgent, Emergent).
