Job summary

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
• License as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Alabama.
• Current CPR Certification.

• Experience working with school-age children is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Carry out Life Academy health program in assigned schools.
• Schedule and conduct screenings for vision, hearing, and scoliosis.
• Document and refer students with deficiencies per regulations.
• Establish and maintain contact with community agencies and clinics.
• Learn and follow policies for health care of students.
• Investigate referrals and refer to appropriate agency; follow up as needed.
• Schedule home visits when appropriate.
• Collaborate with principals and teachers to plan first aid and safety education.

• Current clinical skills necessary to provide safe nursing care to school-age children with special health care needs.
• Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with students, parents, administrators, faculty, and staff.
• Experience working with school-age children is highly desirable.

Essential Duties:

• Responsible for carrying out Life Academy health program in assigned schools
• Schedules and conducts screening and assessments to detect problems in vision, hearing, and scoliosis.
• Documents and refers students with deficiencies in accordance with Departmental Regulations
• Establishes and maintains contact with community agencies and clinics
• Responsible for learning, providing, and staying familiar with the policies and procedures for the health care of students
• Investigates referrals regarding individual health problems and refers to the appropriate agency for treatment; follows up and submits any required reports
• Schedules and conducts home visits when appropriate
• Works with principal and teachers to plan and carry out first aid and safety education programs
• Trains and works with volunteers assisting in the Life Academy Health Program.
• Prepares and makes presentations regarding the School Nursing Program to school and community organizations such as PTA, Clubs, Civic Organizations, etc.
• Participates in school in-service training programs as requested
• Advises and assists teachers in obtaining materials and resources to enhance school health education programs
• Assists in carrying out policies and procedures for control of communicable diseases within assigned schools
• Conducts inspections and evaluations; furnishes information to school officials and parents
• Maintains required records and compiles and submits periodic reports and evaluations regarding the status of programs within assigned schools
• Performs other related duties as assigned
• Administers medication to students
