The Parks Technician I-III must be a hardworking, self-motivated, and dependable individual able to work with or without supervision and enjoys working with the public. This position is responsible for a variety of duties necessary for the operation and maintenance of the Parks Department. The Parks Maintenance Technician shall work at the direction of the Parks Department Supervisor and Public Works Operations Manager.
HOURS: Typical hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Must be flexible to work evenings and weekends.
Additional Hours: Will be required to perform on-call duty, work weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary to meet the needs of the Town of Berthoud.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The list below is illustrative of the responsibilities of the position and not all encompassing. The Town may change these duties at any time.
- Performs mowing, weeding, trimming, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing, pest control, planting and cleaning of lawns, trees, plants, and parks/cemetery.
- Maintains parks, equipment, buildings, and facilities with monthly maintenance records.
- Performs construction and demolition of park facilities, drainage, low-voltage electrical and irrigation systems for new, expanded, and renovated park facilities as part of capital improvement projects.
- Performs field preparations for scheduled baseball, softball, soccer, and flag football games.
- Performs maintenance, repairs, and water scheduling on irrigation systems.
- Performs reservation preparations for scheduled pavilion and/or park rentals.
- Performs snow and ice removal on and around Town of Berthoud parks properties.
- Removes and disposes of trash and litter.
- Operates small trucks, dump trucks, tractors, skid steers, utility vehicles, ATVs, ride–on and walk-behind mowing equipment.
- May be required to operate heavy equipment.
- Utilizes a wide variety of construction tools and mechanical equipment.
- Must have working knowledge of standard and job-specific methods, materials, terminology, and safe work practices of maintenance, construction, and gardening/landscape work, along with maintenance equipment and tools.
- May be required to interact with residents on site or when requested.
- May be required to utilize department or Town-wide software applications to maintain records or perform various duties.
- May be required to supervise seasonal staff.
- Involves significant time walking, stooping, bending, squatting, lifting heavy objects, operating hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicles daily.
- Considerable time spent working outdoors in occasional extreme heat and cold.
- May be required to apply pesticides/fertilizers and chemicals to plants, lawns, shrubs, and trees.
- Keep informed of all changes in duties related to the position.
- Perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Public Works Operations Manager.

Education
- High School diploma or GED required.
Work Experience
- Parks Technician I – Experience in landscape maintenance is helpful but not required.
- Parks Technician II – Minimum 1 to 2 years of experience working with Parks Maintenance Operations.
- Parks Technician III – 2 to 4 years of experience working with Parks Maintenance Operations.
Certificates and Licenses
The Parks Technician I will be required to complete the below training/certifications as well as demonstrate knowledge, use, and maintenance of various equipment with supervision.
- A valid Colorado Driver’s license and evidence of insurability is required.
- CPR/First Aid/AED certification or ability to obtain within 3 months of employment.
- Complete in-house equipment trainings.
- Complete in-house CIRSA safety trainings.
- CDOT Flagger training or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
- Completed OSHA 10 training.
Increased responsibilities and equipment operation for Parks Technician II and III are detailed accordingly, including specific certifications and licenses.
Work Environment
May experience: extreme cold, heat, humidity, wetness, noise, hazards, temperature change, atmospheric conditions, vibration.
Physical Demands
May include: reading, climbing stairs, crouching, grasping, gripping, handling, kneeling, pinching, pulling, reaching, vision, repetitive motions, sitting, standing, walking, stooping, and lifting up to 100 lbs.
