Job summary

JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Parks and Facilities, the Parks Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of parks and related facilities. This position is a non-supervisory position and is engaged in duties that include, but are not limited to, operating and directing the operation of various types of heavy equipment, facilitating directives for the care of City parks and facilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Operates mowers, tractors, trencher, vehicles and equipment.
  • Utilizes a variety of hand and power tools in park landscape maintenance work.
  • Assists in routine maintenance of such equipment.
  • Climb and trim trees.
  • Operates a weed eater, mower and loader or other equipment as necessary.
  • Prepares and maintains athletic fields and related facilities.
  • Cleans restrooms and pick up litter around parks and medians.
  • Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the City's irrigation system.
  • Waters, mows, removes weeds from, renovates, and fertilizes Iawns.
  • Prunes trees and shrubs; plant trees, flowers, and shrubs; rake leaves and clean walks, fields, courts and other facilities.
  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled tasks involving the maintenance, construction and repair of park and recreational facilities.
  • Applies herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides safely.
  • Maintains records of fertilizers and chemicals used.
  • Perform manual labor including lifting heavy weights, stooping, bending and twisting.
  • Assists with facility related tasks including furniture building or moving, minor facility repairs, and other tasks appropriate for knowledge and skills possessed.
  • May assist in other sections of the department as necessary.
  • Demonstrate high ethical standards, trustworthiness, and personal integrity.
  • Regular attendance and punctual attendance is required.
  • Perform other such duties as may be assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience in grounds maintenance and landscaping work preferred, but not required.
  • Must be 18 years old.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws or regulations related to the position's duties.
  • Knowledge of uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Ability to perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to learn to operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and self-initiate.
  • Ability to perform tasks effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City personnel and the general public.
  • Skilled in safe operation of machines, tools, and equipment used in park maintenance, operations, and landscaping; Pruning, planting, edging and mowing; tree care and maintenance; Painting; minor carpentry; concepts and methods of concrete, asphalt and plumbing/irrigation repairs; Proper use of chemicals and spraying equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written.
  • Ability to interact with all internal and external customers and City staff in a tactful, patient, and courteous manner.
  • High customer service skills.

The employee will be regularly subjected to the outdoor environment, including extreme weather, such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind. This position is regularly working near or with moving mechanical parts and equipment and frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock and insect bites or stings. The noise level in the work environment is generally loud.
