Job description

The City of Onalaska is seeking to hire a full-time Parks Laborer in the Parks & Recreation department. The Parks Laborer is responsible for the comprehensive maintenance, repair, and improvement of city parks and recreational facilities, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for the community. This role encompasses a wide range of tasks, including landscaping, facility maintenance, forestry duties, aquatic system operation, and snow removal, all performed under the direction of the Parks Manager. By utilizing a variety of skills and equipment, the Parks Laborer contributes to the preservation and enhancement of park assets, ultimately supporting the community's access to quality recreational spaces.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Maintains areas of parks and recreational facilities, including but not limited to mowing, irrigating, cleaning, and general landscaping.
  2. Performs regular maintenance responsibilities at park facilities regarding heating/cooling systems and minor electrical and plumbing repairs; assists with restoration and construction of park facilities.
  3. Performs custodial tasks typical of public buildings and facilities.
  4. Performs forestry duties, including invasive plant management and eradication.
  5. Operates and maintains aquatic systems at the Aquatic Center to ensure water quality.
  6. Prepares and maintains athletic fields for recreation programs.
  7. Assists in training seasonal/part-time employees and may act as a team leader on departmental projects.
  8. Performs preventive maintenance and inspections on park equipment and vehicles.
  9. Constructs, repairs, and renovates park facilities, including buildings, pavilions, restrooms, playgrounds, fences, signs, and trails.
  10. Handles seasonal start-up and winterization of parks and facilities.
  11. Performs snow and ice control, including plowing, sanding, spreading de-icing chemicals, and snow hauling; operates snow removal equipment, possibly on an emergency basis.
  12. Answers questions about parks and facilities, informing users of rules and regulations.
  13. Contributes to a cooperative work environment, assisting others and completing special projects as needed.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.
Compensation and Benefits:

The starting wage for this non-exempt position is $25.00 per hour (grade 4, step 1) through $28.09 per hour (grade 6, step 1), depending on qualifications.
