Job summary

The City of Odessa Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a dedicated Irrigation Technician to install, maintain, and repair commercial irrigation systems across parks, sports fields, and landscape areas. Under supervision, you will troubleshoot pumps, valves, clocks, and controllers, and ensure proper watering schedules and area coverage.

Qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED and at least 1 year of irrigation maintenance experience.

Job description

Department: Parks & Recreation Reports to: Irrigation Supervisor

Summary: Under basic supervision, installs, maintains, and repairs commercial irrigation systems used in the City's parks, sports fields, and landscaped areas for the Parks and Recreation Department.

Essential Functions

• Tests, repairs and maintains Parks Department water irrigation systems; tests, repairs, replaces, installs, troubleshoots, and maintains electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic components.
• Identifies and troubleshoots problems with irrigation systems and components, including pumps, valves, pipes, heads, electrical devices, and flow meters; repairs and replaces components as necessary.
• Inspects and diagnoses water irrigation management system problems; repairs and replaces clocks and timer components; adjusts irrigation timing system, watering schedule, and area coverage.
• Operates vehicles and equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair.
• Completes daily work log, incident and accident reports, and requisitions for supplies and materials.
• Works on assigned projects, and makes appropriate decisions based on work experience; notifies supervisors of repair problems beyond the scope of authority.
• Inspects irrigation systems installed by contractors.
• Maintains plumbing systems in parks and community centers.
• Assists with preparation of irrigation plans and specifications.
• Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries.
• Supports the departmental operations with regular and timely attendance.
• Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED preferred. 1 year of irrigation system maintenance experience desired.

Knowledge of

• Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in maintenance of parks.
• Commercial irrigation system design and maintenance practices and standards, and operational characteristics of automated irrigation management systems.
• Methods, materials, and standards used to install, test, maintain, and repair commercial irrigation water meters, valves, and electrical and electronic control devices.
• Federal, state, and City safety rules and regulations, and irrigation and plumbing system codes.
• OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.

Skill in

• Diagnosing repair problems on automated irrigation maintenance management systems.
• Installing, repairing, and maintaining irrigation and plumbing systems according to standard operating and safety procedures.
• Following safe work practices.
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers.

License and certification requirements

A Texas Driver's License is required.

Physical demands and working environment

Work is performed indoors, outdoors, and at City facilities; requires moderate physical efforts, and the ability to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment. Must use City approved safety shoes.
