Job summary

The City of DeSoto is looking for an Irrigation Technician to perform journey-level work in installing, repairing, and maintaining irrigation sprinkler systems on City property. This role supports watering for golf courses, park areas, and playing fields.

Responsibilities include design and supervision of installations, maintenance of irrigation systems and drinking fountains, and routine preventive maintenance. A valid driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three years irrigation or landscaping experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs journey-level work in installation, repair, and maintenance of irrigation sprinkler systems on City property for proper watering of golf courses, parks, and fields.
  • Manages, designs, and supervises irrigation installations; inspects and maintains irrigation systems and drinking fountains on Park and Recreation properties.
  • Loads and unloads tools, irrigation materials, and equipment onto trucks to ensure tools are available for repairs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on sprinkler systems, including checks, cleaning parts, and adjustments.
  • Diagnoses problems when possible or refers to journey-level irrigation staff for repairs.
  • Digs trenches, operates tractor to pull water tanks, and uses chainsaws and trimmers for irrigation maintenance.
  • Provides quality customer service and competent public interaction.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

The Irrigation Technician performs journey-level work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of irrigation sprinkler systems on City property to ensure effective watering of golf courses, park areas, and playing fields.

  • Manages, designs, permits, and supervises installations; inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains drinking fountains and irrigation systems within Park and Recreation properties; provides a high level of maintenance for turf and landscaping areas within the City.
  • Loads and unloads tools, irrigation materials, and equipment onto trucks to ensure necessary tools are available for repairs to be made.
  • Performs general technical and preventive maintenance on sprinkler systems such as checking oils, cleaning parts, and making adjustments to ensure system is maintained in proper operating condition.
  • Makes diagnoses of problems when possible or refers to journey level irrigation worker to provide effective repair of sprinkler systems.
  • Performs a variety of activities such as digging trenches, driving tractor to pull water tank, using chain saws and weed eaters to assist with irrigation system maintenance.
  • Provides quality customer service and competent public interaction.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Three (3) years of installing irrigation or working with landscaping.
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Valid Texas Irrigator’s License Issued by the Texas Commission Environmental Quality (TCEQ) preferred.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures;
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of installing and maintaining irrigation systems;
  • Knowledge and understanding of safety procedures;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Skill in the operation and use of standard office software which includes databases and presentation programs, along with standard Microsoft products; and
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, and elected and appointed officials.
  • Highly organized and have the ability to prioritize projects and handle several projects at the same time.
  • Exhibit good problem-solving skills and good judgment in keeping with the mission of the Recreation Department.
