Job summary

The Maryland Zoo is seeking a part-time Parking Security Officer to direct vehicle traffic, ensure guest safety, and support zoo operations. This role includes standing, walking, and maintaining activities in diverse weather conditions.

Minimum qualifications require a high school diploma and related experience. Candidates should possess excellent communication skills and a friendly disposition. The shifts are Friday through Monday from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, contributing to the Zoo’s mission to protect wildlife and support community engagement.

Qualifications

  • Exposure to first aid and/or CPR training a plus.
  • Exposure to safety and security protocols preferred.

Parking Security Officer (Part-Time)

General Summary: The Parking Security Officer will direct vehicles and greet guests in the parking lots, provide safety resources and work in zoo areas, as assigned. Additionally, the Parking Security Officer will support the Zoo’s mission to save wildlife and protect wild places and contribute to its environmental, social, governance sustainability, conservation, education, and DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion) goals.

Hours of Shift: Friday - Monday, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Essential Functions:

Primary Functions:

  • Direct cars, buses and other traffic into appropriate parking, drop off or delivery areas;
  • Open and close parking lots as necessary;
  • Monitor all parking areas to prevent break‑ins and/or vandalism of vehicles and Zoo property;
  • Keep all parking areas and entrance areas clean and free of litter;
  • Place directional signs, cones and barricades as needed;
  • Direct vehicles and pedestrians with flags and other hand‑held devices;
  • Work in and/or help out in any aspect of Zoo operations as directed when appropriate;
  • Ensure guest safety at all times;
  • Perform other duties as assigned; and,
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo.

Communication (Internal and External):

  • Greet guests and respond appropriately to guests’ questions, comments, or concerns in a friendly, professional, and informed manner;
  • Monitor unauthorized persons and loitering in or around the parking lots and notify Dispatch and/or management of suspicious persons or activities;
  • Communicate with the Security Department by radio contact as needed following Zoo radio etiquette and protocol at all times; and,
  • Contact an appropriate Security staff member necessary to resolve security issues by radio contact as needed to communicate information.

Management of Resources (Financial, Human Resources, Facilities):

  • Monitor guests’ behavior to ensure their safety on and around the parking lots near the Main Gate.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Experience/Training:

  • Minimum of six months related experience and/or training.
  • Exposure to first aid and/or CPR training a plus.
  • Exposure to safety and security protocols preferred.

Hospitality:

  • Friendly disposition;
  • Possess a positive and patient attitude; and
  • Possess excellent verbal communication skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to stand, walk and/or run, and remain active for an eight-hour shift;
  • Must be able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed;
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events; and,
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects; and,
  • Exposure to potential environmental hazards such as poison oak/ivy, uneven terrain, insect bites/stings, and Hepatitis B depending on the position.

Equipment:

  • Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including telephone, two‑way radio, etc.

Traits Desirable:

  • Possess a clear comprehension of vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow;
  • Possess an outgoing personality with the ability to approach guests and take charge of challenging situations;
  • Ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds;
  • Ability to identify and resolve guest issues; and,
  • Ability to work independently and stay productive with minimal direct supervision.
