Job summary

Job description

The City of Roanoke Police Department is seeking a Park Services Technician to patrol City parks, greenways, and public facilities to ensure a safe environment for public use. The Park Services Technician will interpret and explain the Code of Virginia, Roanoke City Municipal Code, park rules and other applicable regulations to patrons and public when violations occur. The successful candidate will deter unacceptable or illegal behavior under the direction of the Roanoke Police Department by maintaining high visibility, diffusing difficult situations, and charging violators for offenses committed.

High school diploma or GED is required. College credits for classes in recreation management or criminal justice are preferred. The selected candidate must possess a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must pass extensive background check.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Patrols in all types of weather and conditions, on foot, bicycle, department issued truck/SUV/vehicle, or ATV/UTV, within or on city owned or operated parks, community centers, play fields, joint use school/park sites, public parking lots, landscaped rights of way, public trails and open space areas owned or operated by the City of Roanoke.
  • Ensures that public facilities are reasonably safe for public use; provides a deterrent to unacceptable or illegal behavior by maintaining high visibility at City facilities and charging violators under the Code of Virginia, Roanoke Municipal Code, or other regulations.
  • Explains, interprets and enforces park rules and other applicable regulations to patrons and the general public.
  • Issues warnings, citations, or makes arrests, when necessary, within scope of responsibility as an Auxiliary Police Officer III, certified through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.
  • Requests additional assistance from patrol as appropriate in detaining or arresting individuals whose actions endanger persons or property.
  • Provides security as needed at special events; provides assistance in emergencies and administers first aid and/or CPR when necessary.
  • Assist with crime reporting by conducting witnesses and victim Interviews regarding criminal incidents to complete an incident-based report in the Police Records Management System.
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the department director or designee.
  • Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned within the scope of their position within the Roanoke Police Department.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Conditions of Employment.

This position requires specialized training provided at City expense. As a condition of employment, the selected candidate must execute the City's Reimbursement Contract for Training Expenses, under which the employee agrees to repay a prorated portion of the City's documented training costs if the employee separates from City employment before completing the service period specified in that contract. A copy of the contract is available upon request prior to acceptance of any offer. Neither this posting nor the Reimbursement Contract creates a contract of employment for any fixed term or alters the at-will nature of employment with the City.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School diploma is required. College credits for classes in recreation management or criminal justice are preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as laws, policies, regulations safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to respond effectively to inquiries orally and in writing. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Possession of a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is necessary and must be able to operate a city vehicle. Must meet and maintain DCJS Auxiliary 3 requirements.
