ARIZONA STATE PARKS AND TRAILS is seeking a Park Ranger Assistant at Roper Lake State Park. This seasonal/temporary role offers up to 40 hours per week and up to 1,500 hours per calendar year. Evening, weekend, and holiday availability is required.

Job duties include customer service, cashiering, safety enforcement, program support, and general maintenance. A valid Arizona driver's license is required; EMT certification may be necessary for some assignments.

Qualifications

  • One year of customer service experience or a Bachelor's degree in Park Management or related field.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Arizona Driver’s license; EMT certification may be required.
  • Knowledge of park rules, safety, and customer service best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service by phone and in person and respond to inquiries about park hours, accommodations, and reservations.
  • Perform cashier duties at Contact Station/Gift Shop and collect fees for park admission and store purchases.
  • Promote visitor safety, enforce park rules, and coordinate with local officials and law enforcement as needed.
  • Host visitors and assist with interpretive programs, guided walks, or hikes.
  • General cleaning of facilities, restrooms, and maintenance of park facilities and grounds.

Job Summary:

Under supervision, performs a variety of work activities while providing customer service in the operation of a recreational, historic or natural resource park; interprets natural features of the area, or historic objects/artifacts for visitors; and ensures public safety by enforcing Park rules and regulations.

Job Duties:
Customer Service:
  • Provides customer service by phone and in person and respond to publics inquiries about park hours, accommodations and reservations.
Cash Handling:
  • Perform cashier duties at Contact Station/Gift Shop.
  • Collect and account for fees for park admission and store purchases.
Public & Staff Safety:
  • Promote the safety of park visitors and enforce Park rules and protect Park resources.
  • Utilize two-way radio communications system.
  • Confers with local officials and law enforcement officers.
  • Completes all necessary reports concerning incidents.
Outdoor Recreation & Programmatic:
  • Host visitors.
  • Assists with interpretive programs and may lead guided walks or hikes.
  • Assists with information in response to visitor questions, directions, guidance, and concerns.
General Maintenance and Cleaning:
  • General cleaning of facilities as necessary.
  • Maintains visitor center and all restrooms, toilet cleaning in clean, sanitary conditions.
  • Sweep and mop floors, restock towels, toilet paper, soap dispensers.
  • Maintains and inspects all park facilities; litter removal, trail maintenance.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of: A working understanding of principles and processes for providing customer and personalservices.
  • Knowledge of: Park rules/ regulations, fees and revenue functions.
  • Knowledge of: Building maintenance, groundskeeping and tool usage.
  • Knowledge of: General office procedures.
  • Skills in: Public relations and information dissemination.
  • Skills in: Customer service, active listening.

  • Skills in: Driving and operating automotive equipment.
  • Ability to: Research of natural or historical information.

Selective Preference(s):

The ideal candidate for this position will have One year of customer service experience equivalent; OR a Bachelor's degree in Park Management, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field. Any combination of training and experience that meet knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Must possess and maintain a current Arizona Driver’s license appropriate to assignment. Some positions may require certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.

Retirement:

Eligible for Arizona State Retirement System pension. Enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment for newly hired State of Arizona employees.
