Job summary

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a permanent, full-time Park Ranger 2 to independently plan and carry out complex park operations, maintenance, facility management, resource conservation, and interpretive tasks.

You will work within the Milo McIver Management Unit at Tryon Creek State Natural Area, supervising as needed to protect and enhance state park lands and resources.

Qualifications

  • Four years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation; events) and/or maintenance experience.
  • Associate's degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies with 2.5 years of visitor services and/or maintenance experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies with 1 year of visitor services and/or maintenance experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and carry out complex park operations, maintenance, facility management, resource conservation, and interpretive tasks.
  • Direct others to protect, maintain, operate, repair, and enhance state park lands and resources within Milo McIver Management Unit.

Your New Role

As a permanent, full-time Park Ranger 2, you will independently plan and carry out complex park operations, maintenance, facility management, resource conservation, and interpretive tasks. You will perform these duties personally or by directing others to protect, maintain, operate, repair, and enhance state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment, and systems within the Milo McIver Management Unit at Tryon Creek State Natural Area.

  • A Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies AND 1 year of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

Special Requirements:
  • To be hired, a criminal record and driving record check must be completed that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment while also maintaining a valid driver’s license.

  • This position is required to work nights, weekends and holidays especially during the summer season.

Desired Attributes:
  • Skill in evaluating situations, applying rules and guidelines, determining and carrying out appropriate course of action to achieve desired results.

  • Ability to maintain composure and take appropriate action during emergency or emotionally charged situations.

  • Knowledge of park resources, facility operations, maintenance and resource interpretation.

  • Experience leading individuals or teams to accomplish basic tasks and achieve goals.

  • Experience in promoting a culturally competent and diverse work environment.

  • Skill in performing plumbing, carpentry, painting, grounds-keeping tasks at a journeyman level.
