Job summary

Nevada Division of State Parks is seeking to fill a Park Ranger II underfill for a Park Supervisor II. The position manages Cathedral Gorge State Park and the Regional Visitor Center near Panaca, plus Beaver Dam State Park, including supervision of staff and daily operations.

The incumbent must work varied hours including holidays and weekends in all weather, and must reside in the park area. NV POST Category 1 Peace Officer Academy may be required; academy costs are paid by the agency.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field and one year of professional park ranger experience OR one year as Park Ranger I (Commissioned) in Nevada State service OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and participate in day-to-day park operation and maintenance projects; train, supervise and evaluate seasonal personnel.
• Clean and maintain park buildings, grounds, offices, restrooms, and vehicles; schedule and assign personnel to collect fees, staff visitor centers, and conduct tours.
• Enforce laws and regulations; investigate accidents, write citations, make arrests, conduct search and rescue operations, respond to emergencies, and interact with other law enforcement agencies.
• Implement resource management plans; identify resource problems; develop solutions and initiate projects for resource preservation.
• Plan, develop, and conduct special events and interpretive activities to inform park visitors about park attractions and environment.
• Perform the full range of duties as Park Ranger II under supervision; this is the journey level in the series.

Job description

The Nevada Division of State Parks is seeking to fill a Park Ranger 2 underfilling for a Park Supervisor 2. This position is responsible for the management of Cathedral Gorge State Park and the Regional Visitor Center near Panaca, and Beaver Dam State Park 36 miles from Caliente. The 1,784-acre Cathedral Gorge is world renowned for the dramatic clay spirals throughout the park, remnants of a Pliocene-era lakebed. The park also maintains a 24/7 RV campground, hiking/mt. bike trails and the Regional Visitor Center. Beaver Dam State Park is 5,629 acres and offers primitive camping sites, scenic vistas, hiking/UTV trails and stream fishing for trout. Management responsibilities include supervision of permanent and seasonal employees, various administrative duties including budget development and oversight, collection and safeguarding of fees, overall maintenance and operations, employee performance evaluations, completion of routine and special reports. The incumbent must make decisions regarding resources, facility maintenance, equipment and materials. This is a commissioned (Law Enforcement) position with public safety responsibilities and is required to work various hours and shifts including holidays and weekends in a variety of weather conditions. Park residency, at this location, is mandatory. In order to receive consideration, applicants must indicate their ability to work in this geographical location. Since this is a commissioned position, the successful candidate, if not currently NV POST certified, would have to successfully complete a NV POST approved Category 1 Peace Officer Academy. The cost of the academy would be paid by the agency.

Park Rangers (Commissioned) participate in operations, law enforcement, resource management, interpretation, and maintenance activities at an assigned State park.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major or minor in park management, outdoor recreation management, ecology, forestry, biology, agriculture, education, natural or environmental sciences, horticulture, history/folklore, wildlife management, museum management, park interpretation, business or public administration, criminal justice, or related field, and one year of professional park ranger experience in park operations and maintenance; OR one year of experience as a Park Ranger I (Commissioned) in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Coordinate and participate in day-to-day park operation and maintenance projects; train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned seasonal personnel; clean and maintain park buildings, grounds, offices, restrooms, and vehicles; schedule and assign personnel to collect fees, staff visitor centers, and conduct tours.

Gather, record and audit information related to visitor use and fees collected; take inventory and submit supply requests; prepare activity reports on areas of responsibility; make reservations and respond to letters and telephone inquiries; operate park weather station, sales outlet and water safety and control devices at the park.

Enforce laws and regulations including applicable State laws, county ordinances, and park rules and policies; investigate accidents, write citations, make arrests, conduct search and rescue operations, respond to emergency situations, and interact with other law enforcement agencies to preserve the peace and protect park visitors.

Implement the resource management plan; identify resource problems; develop solutions and initiate projects for resource preservation and rehabilitation.

Participate in planning, developing, and conducting special events and on-going interpretive activities such as tours, hikes, displays, exhibits, talks and visitor centers to inform park visitors of park attractions, flora, fauna, cultural and natural history, and environmental education.

Under the general supervision of a Park Supervisor, incumbents perform the full range of duties outlined in the series concept. This is the journey level in the series.
