Job summary

The City of Lauderdale Lakes is seeking a Park Safety/Information Assistant who will inform the public about Parks and Recreation services and educate visitors on rules to ensure a safe park experience. You will identify safety concerns, assist with events, and enforce city ordinances while maintaining facility security.

Responsibilities include assisting with rentals, responding to incidents, providing basic first aid, and coordinating with emergency responders as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess at least two (2) years of related work experience involving public interaction in a parks and recreation setting; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must possess a valid State issued Driver’s License.
  • Must pass VECHS and DCF background checks.
  • CPR and AED certifications must be obtained within three (3) months of employment.
  • Crowd Manager Certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Educate Park visitors about amenities, safety guidelines, and park regulations.
  • Maintains high visibility while patrolling park grounds by foot or other modes of transportation, engaging with park visitors and staff.
  • Assist with monitoring facility and pavilion rentals and ensure all reservations have valid permits.
  • Support special events and recreation programs by assisting with setup, breakdown and crowd control.
  • Address visitor complaints and enforce park rules and city ordinances.
  • Patrol designated park areas and report hazards or unsafe conditions; communicate incidents to authorities.
  • Provide basic first aid and support emergency personnel as needed.
  • Document incidents, maintain logs, and provide data to law enforcement when required.
  • Post Park rules, updates, and notifications.
  • Assist with opening/closing park facilities and ensuring security.
  • Possibly assist with data collection and surveys.
  • Perform maintenance tasks like clearing walkways.

Position Description

This position serves as an integral part of the Parks and Human Services team. Under general supervision, the individual provides information to the public about Parks and Recreation services and educates park visitors on facility rules and regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable park experience. The position identifies and reports safety or maintenance concerns and assists with recreation programs and special events as assigned.

Supervision Received

Works under the general guidance and direction of the Director of Parks and Human Services and/or designee.

Essential Duties
  • Educate Park visitors about amenities, safety guidelines, and park regulations.
  • Maintains high visibility while patrolling park grounds by foot or alternative modes of transportation, engaging regularly with park visitors and staff.
  • Assists with monitoring facility and pavilion rentals and ensures all reservations have valid permits.
  • Supports special events and recreation programs by assisting with setup, breakdown, and crowd control.
  • Helps staff address visitor complaints and tactfully enforces park rules and city ordinances.
  • Patrols designated park areas to identify and report hazards or unsafe conditions; initiates corrective actions as needed and communicates incidents to appropriate authorities including management, emergency responders, and the Broward Sheriff's Office.
  • Provides basic first aid and supports emergency personnel as needed.
  • Documents incidents and accidents, maintains logs, and provides relevant data to law enforcement when required.
  • Posts Park rules, updates, and notifications.
  • Assists with opening and closing park facilities and ensures they are secure.
  • May assist with collecting field data and conducting surveys.
  • Performs maintenance tasks such as clearing walkways of debris and minor obstructions.
  • Interacts with a diverse population including seniors, children, school groups, athletic organizations, and the general public.
  • Operates city vehicles, two-way radios, and other assigned equipment.
  • Performs other duties assigned and/or required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess at least two (2) years of related work experience involving public interaction in a parks and recreation setting; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must possess a valid State issued Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a level two (2) background check through the State of Florida's Volunteer and Employee Criminal History System (VECHS) as well as through the Department of Children and Families (DCF).
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications must be obtained within three (3) months of employment.
  • Crowd Manager Certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.

  • Knowledge of municipal recreation and park programming, activities, and special events

  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Physical Requirements

Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work and may require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects or materials (up to 100 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve extended periods of time standing and/or walking.

Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors.

Work Environment

Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and/or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature, and noise extremes, machinery and/or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids, violence and/or disease, or pathogenic substances.
