Duties Summary

Park Maintenance Supervisor II: Organizes, directs, and coordinates State parks operations and maintenance in a county-wide district involving two or more widely separated crews; performs various general support functions; and performs other duties as required.

Who we are: The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of State Parks manages 52 state parks encompassing nearly 25,000 acres on five major islands. Parks range from landscaped facilities to wildland areas. Our mission is to manage, protect, preserve and interpret Hawaii's natural and cultural heritage values, provide outdoor recreation opportunities, and promote a quality experience for visitors and residents.

As a Park Maintenance Supervisor II, you’ll lead the maintenance and operations of over 6,000 acres of park areas and historic sites in the Kauai Parks Section, West Kauai Unit. This includes Kokee State Park, Na Pali Coast Wilderness Park, Polihale State Park, Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historic Park, Waimea Canyon State Park, and Waimea State Recreational Pier. You’ll oversee the upkeep of campgrounds, historic structures, comfort stations, cabins, water systems, access roads, parking areas, cultural sites, and scenic resources, ensuring they remain safe, clean, and accessible. You will also educate the public on State Parks rules, promote stewardship, and help preserve Hawaii’s cultural and natural resources for future generations.

Minimum Qualifications Requirements

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Legal Authorization to Work: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking government employment to be U.S. citizens, nationals, permanent resident aliens, or eligible for unrestricted employment under federal law.

Experience Requirements

  • General Experience: Two (2) years of experience in groundskeeping/grounds maintenance or related work using hand tools and light motorized equipment; or unskilled/semi-skilled work requiring common tools in building or mechanical trades.
  • Specialized Experience: Two (2) years of semi-skilled or skilled building trades experience related to constructing or maintaining buildings, shelters, and similar structures; performing repairs and inspections against plans/specifications.
  • Supervisory Aptitude: Demonstrated aptitude for supervisory duties through leadership, supervision training, or favorable supervisor appraisals.
  • Substitutions Allowed: Substitutions described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements apply.
  • Other Requirements: License: Valid driver’s license at time of appointment.
  • Lift and Carry: Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lb unassisted and up to 100 lb with assistance or equipment.
