Job summary

County of Maui seeks an experienced supervisor to lead maintenance and repair of park grounds, buildings, equipment and related structures. You will supervise equipment operators, park caretakers and support staff, assign work, inspect areas, and manage resources and safety protocols.

The role requires high school completion and four years in parks maintenance; a valid Hawaii Type 3 driver's license is required.

Qualifications

• A combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years of experience in the care, maintenance and repair of park grounds, buildings, equipment and other structures.
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3).
• Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision; basic methods and tools used in the common buildings and construction trades; soil preparation and general care of plants; operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
• Ability to plan, lay out, assign and review the work of others in the care, maintenance and repair work of park grounds, buildings, equipment and other facilities; prepare estimates of costs for materials, equipment and supplies; keep records and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective work relationships; meet and deal with the public in a courteous manner and enforce applicable ordinances, rules and regulations.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This class is distinguished by its responsibility for supervising the care, maintenance and repair of park grounds, buildings, equipment and other structures in a designated district. The work involves the supervision over a workforce which includes equipment operators and park caretakers.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years of experience in the care, maintenance and repair of park grounds, buildings, equipment and other structures.

License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3).

Knowledge of: principles and practices of supervision; basic methods and tools used in the common buildings and construction trades; methods of preparing soils and general care of plants, flowers, shrubs and trees; operations and maintenance of grounds maintenance equipment and tools.

Ability to: plan, lay out, assign and review the work of others in the care, maintenance and repair work of park grounds, buildings, equipment and other facilities; prepare estimates of costs for materials, equipment and supplies; keep records and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective work relationship with subordinates; meet and deal with the public in a courteous manner and enforce applicable ordinances, rules and regulations.
