Overview
The Superintendent of Trades oversees all skilled trade operations within the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. This role directs and coordinates a multi-trades team, including carpenters, painters, welders, electricians, and plumbers, to ensure efficient maintenance, repair, and installation of park infrastructure. The Superintendent ensures activities meet safety, quality, and compliance standards, supporting the mission to preserve and enhance Boston’s parks and recreational spaces.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, schedule, and evaluate skilled tradespeople.
- Assign and prioritize work orders for maintenance and projects.
- Manage and direct trade staff in maintaining park facilities, buildings, athletic fields, irrigation systems, and spray features.
- Conduct staff meetings, coordinate training, and enforce safety protocols.
- Develop and monitor maintenance and repair schedules.
- Manage emergency responses and urgent repairs.
- Oversee procurement and inventory of materials, tools, and equipment.
- Ensure quality control and compliance on work by staff and contractors.
- Maintain records related to timekeeping, equipment, costs, and scheduling.
- Collaborate with city departments, vendors, and community partners.
- Respond to public inquiries and complaints.
- Manage the department’s CMMS and GIS asset tracking systems.
- Train staff in digital work order and asset tracking tools.
- Analyze maintenance data and produce performance reports.
- Ensure adherence to policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Perform related work as required.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
- At least four (4) years of paid experience in Park Maintenance or related field, with two (2) years in a supervisory role.
- High School Diploma or equivalent; college degree in Park Management or related field may substitute supervisory experience.
- Experience supervising skilled trades in municipal, construction, or facilities maintenance settings.
- Strong knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, welding, and irrigation practices.
- Ability to manage complex maintenance operations across dispersed facilities.
- Familiarity with CMMS and GIS systems.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to coordinate with stakeholders, including the public.
- Experience managing budgets, procurement, and vendor contracts is a plus.
- Attention to detail and good judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Trade or technical certifications in relevant trades.
- OSHA safety training or similar certifications.
- Knowledge of union labor practices and civil service guidelines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and maintenance management software.
